The original iPhone had the most sensational keynote by far. It's still thrilling to watch today. Thanks, Steve.
The iPhone 4 is my favourite. Like a Leica.

iphone 4 was the high water mark.
I am so glad iPhone 4 is winning, It was fantastic. Radically different design, antennagate, white iPhone saga and the last iPhone Steve actually launched. I also think the bumpers were a really cool accessory.
My iPhone 4 is still my favorite. It's now 4.5 yrs old and still getting about 50% battery life on it's original battery. The original!
I've spent some time handling both the iPhone 6 and 6+ in the Apple store.iPhone 6 Plus... the bigger screen is just what I needed
The iPhone 4 was the first phone to truly wow me. It had build quality second to none, a great camera, a glorious o/s and it did everything I wanted. When I got the i5 I was hoping for more of the same but better. It was an ok phone but didn't wow me like the i4 did. The build quality wasn't as good (mine had loose volume and mute buttons) and when iOS7 was released it was full of bugs & raped my battery life. That was the start of my iPhone woes really.
Fast forward to the 6+ and it's by far the most unhappy I've been with any phone, ever. It reloads everything, crashes and browsing is a joke on data-heavy sites. iOS8 is a buggy mess, WiFi range is poor and when you add the out-dated chunky bezels & protruding camera etc it's just a bad phone. I can't wait to get rid of it and really, can Apple ever again release a smartphone with the wow factor of the iPhone 4 and iOS5/6? I'm not prepared to spend thousands of dollars and years of frustrating ownership waiting for them to finally release another awesome phone.
It's one of those perceptions that will differ from person to person. In my opinion the iPhone 6 was a significant leap forward in terms of design and engineering when I compare it to my old iPhone 5. A more compact framework with less reliance on CNC'd aluminium we had come to be familiar with. This is subjective I know, but being a product designer myself I enjoy the finer details of design through to the final manufacture.I found nothing endearing about the iPhone 6 I had. Felt like a step backwards from the iphone 5S in many ways and didn't have any of the wow factor of the iPhone 4 and 4S. iOS 8 was a complete mess and a buggy nightmare.
Nothing about it seemed like Apple in my opinion. The design is pretty bad actually. Tim Cook needs to get Jon back on a short leash.

I have been very lucky across iOS 7 and 8 too. When I installed 7 on my iPhone 5 this place was full of horror stories with bugs and bricked devices. I had one or two at the very start with the worst being an issue with apps not returning to portrait mode. Pretty insignificant. iOS 8 has been fine so far for me too. Again the horror stories haven't made it to my device, touch wood and all that.
This is all subjective and very difficult apply to everybody's experiences. This is the type of thread that will cover every iPhone and there will be a set of people favouring each one.

Apologies if I pointed out the obvious then, oops. The iPhone 4 is the most popular one in this thread for sure. It's pretty obvious this thread is subjective, but notice the consensus of an overwhelming majority of people selecting the 4/4S. That's not only a consensus, it's also a clue, but in fairness two iPhones are missing from the list.
The best iPhone release for its time was the iPhone 4. The original iPhone keynote I was 14 years old and seeing the highlights on tv were cool but I didn't understand at the time how groundbreaking the product was. At the iPhone 4 keynote I was absolutely blown away with the ramifications of the future and when I saw that absolutely gorgeous display in person for the first time I was in shock and love and understood what this meant for technology.
