Friend challenged me to see if I could remember all the phones I’ve owned (struggled so wrote it down) and made me realize how much I’ve switched. 2013 to 2015 were rough, I was working at a cell phone store and wanted everything. I’d also spent hours each week customizing my phone. I tried to put in order of which phone I had.

Androids only replaced androids. iPhones only replaced iPhones until I stopped using android V20. I had absolutely no reason for two phones and only used for for calls/text/web but carried two and both had services connected.

Motorola Triumph (2011)
Nokia Lumia 710 (2011)
HTC One S (2012)
Samsung Galaxy S3 (2012)
Samsung Galaxy S4 (2013*) & iPhone 5 (2013)
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (2013*) & iPhone 5S (2013)
Google Nexus 5 (2013)
Samsung Galaxy S5 (2014)
HTC One M8 (2014)
OnePlus One (2014)
LG G4 (2014)
Sony Xperia Z1S (2014)
Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (2014) & iPhone 6 Plus (2014)
Google Nexus 6 (2014)
Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ (2015)
One Plus 2 (2015*)
LG G4 (2015)
Google Nexus 6P (2015) & iPhone 6s Plus (2015)
LG V10 (2015)
iPhone 7 Plus (2016)
LG V20 (2017)
iPhone X (2017)
iPhone XS Max (2018)
iPhone 11 PM (2019)
iPhone 12 PM (2020)
iPhone 13 PM (2021)
Samsung S22 Ultra (2022 - bad decision... returned in 30 days)
iPhone 14 PM (2022)
Also had a 3 or 4 non smartphones before this but am struggling to remember them.

Started to calculate money spent but stopped because I did sell almost every single one but have no idea for how much for anything before the iPhone X so I can’t net the amount.

Wow. Seems like soon as you got a smartphone, you settled in. What caused the change (age, time, desire/need, etc...)? How long are you trying to hold out on the XR. I'm still failing with not upgrading yearly even though I said I wouldn't upgraded my 13PM.

None of y’all used a blackberry? Or Motorola startac?
I got my first cell phone when I was 16. That was 1999. My first ever cell phone was a Motorola startac with 3 hours of battery life talk time.
I then got into Ericsson and the dope square Nokias. Who remembers the Charlie’s Angles movie with Drew Barrymore? Remember the Nokia on the movie? I had that one. Even swapped out the outside of the phone with other faceplates colors etc.
I then got into blackberry’s. Ohhh the blackberry’s. Love those keyboards. Had curves 8300. Tours. The best blackberry to me was a bb9930 bold. First touchscreen and keyboard bb. Loved that phone. Was so hard for me to let go of that device. Who remembers crackberry forums? Anyways shame on you RIM LoL .
Then the switch happened…the rest is history. This is my iPhone history

My first was in 2006 with the Cingular 8525. I've had so many phones/smartphones I couldn't even tell ya a list but I remember where I started that period between the 8525 and the iPhone was a good half a dozen other phones I had tried, sold, tried something else. Then the iPhone came out and I've purchased every year.

My first was one of those Motorola analog phones. I think it was $200. I remember asking the sales guy about a new digital technology coming out because I didn’t want to have to buy another cell phone. Gee was I oblivious to the future! I do remember it was 25 cents a minute to make a call. This was around 1993. I think battery life was something like 2 hours.

The other two I remember by name are the Motorola Razr and the Nokia 3650. I loved them both. The Nokia could do video in 3gp format. It was very primitive but better than nothing. I salivated over getting the Nokia even before it was released.

Then in 2007 a friend at work showed me his iPhone. I was giddy at every little feature he showed me and got one asap. Since then it’s been all iPhones. I did the every other year upgrade for awhile. I was on the “S” cycle. Then when the 6 came out I splurged and upgraded from the 5s. Then the 6s came out and I really wanted Live Photos. So that began my every year upgrade cycle which I still do.

My Dad built radios in the 40s with vacuum tubes. He used navigation buoys in the Navy to determine their aircraft location. So he had an appreciation for technology. He said a few times that the iPhone (and especially the gps/maps and billion+ transistors) was borderline magic. I understood his sentiment.

I hear people talk about the lack of innovation in iPhones. I have a different perspective.

Well, my first cell phone was a Motorola StarTac in 1998. Had a couple of them, then some others with brands I don't even remember. I was on Verizon and they didn't have the iPhone at the time, so I switched to AT&T and got an iPhone 3g in 2008. So, my "smartphone path" began with the iPhone and I'm still on it with my 12 Pro Max.

All started when I broke my Motorola sliver on Verizon. Not a smartphone, I know, but broke it and insurance had none to replace it with. Went to several other feature phones all of which had something wrong with them. Asurion sucks. Kept having problems and Verizon gave me an early upgrade to get away from the problems. Unfortunately every phone I had had a problem there as well. Had the lg envy 2. Replace it 6 times in 2 weeks because every one they sent me would shut itself off. Made the decision to move to a blackberry but Verizon wouldn’t let me upgrade again even though I was going to get a more expensive plan at that. So I cancelled my Verizon account went to att and got and iPhone 3GS. Since then I’ve had:

iPhone 3gs
iPhone 4
iPhone 4s
Galaxy s2
Iphone 5
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6 Plus
iPhone 6s Plus
iPhone 7
Galaxy s8+
iPhone 8
iPhone X
iPhone XS max
iPhone 11 Pro Max
iPhone 12 Pro Max
iPhone 13 Pro max
iPhone 14 pro max.

I’ve cured the android fixes. Their phones feel cheap, and the software gets super laggy after a little bit. My experiences anyways.

I was an Apple hater when the iPhone came out and avoided all Apple products like the plague. Now I have at least one of every product they make in my house and am typing this on my 14" MBP. :)

Nokia 5110 (the one everyone had)
Nokia 3310
Nokia 6310i
Sony Ericsson Z500a (freaking LOVED this phone)
LG Chocolate
Samsung dumb phone (it was the one that had Verizon's new satellite TV service)
iPhone 4
iPhone 5
iPhone 6
iPhone 6S
iPhone 7 Plus
iPhone X
iPhone XS Pro Max
iPhone 11 Pro Max
iPhone 12 Pro Max
iPhone 13 Pro Max
iPhone 14 Pro Max

My first was a work issued Motorola StarTAC in 1998, followed by a few BlackBerry ones, starting with the 6710 in about 2002. I recall having the BB Curve for a while. My first iPhone was a personal 3GS in 2008.

I’ve rewatched all the iPhone keynotes and the series of original/3G/3GS/4 are the most fascinating to me. We got to watch it morph from a powerful toy to a powerful pocket computer and camera in real time.

I really debated the Startac! It was so Niles Crane! 😂. I think it was $1000 even back then?
