I got an iPad for Christmas, and I noticed a scratch on it, a fairly big and noticeable one. Then yesterday, I noticed a dead pixel.

Now, I haven't got a chance to go to an Apple Store since the nearest one is an hour or two away, but I will next weekend. Will Apple exchange or return it or say tough luck since you waited to long. Also my parents got my name engraved on it as something extra, will this affect the procedure in any way.

For a scratch, Apple will tell you "to bad"
For a dead pixel, here is Apple's official policy on that
Apple's 9.7-inch iPad display must have three or more dead pixels for the unit to qualify for a replacement. Things get a bit more complicated with larger screens -- including laptops, iMacs and the company's Cinema Display -- as a distinction is made between "bright" and "dark" faulty pixels.

and I'm not sure how the engraving will affect anything.

Not to be negative, but I would say it's going to be difficult. You might luck out and get someone nice who will exchange it no problem, but I think they'll probably tell you that there's nothing they can do. Christmas was two weeks ago, most people who spot a defect will either go back to the store or call within a day or two. Again, I don't want to discourage you, but be prepared to go back empty handed. Good luck!
