I'd agree that the current glasses-free 3D displays are gimmicky, and the Nintendo 3DS will likely be underwhelming. Somewhere down the line when 3D displays improve, 3D plus a Retina Display resolution could combine to be stunning. Apple could make it work, and I'm sure not everything will be 3D (though even the UI elements in Safari may have some depth if it's worthwhile).

3D may still be fairly gimmicky now, but it's not going anywhere, and it'll only get better. Glasses-free 3D is definitely the future of that, and it shouldn't be long until 3D content will look as realistic depth-wise, but will be more stunning than the real word. With the right UI, an iPhone with a 3D display could even have interface elements seem more natural, since we are used to a 3D world after all.

the display will be the same i'm sure.

but i would expect that they will alter the materials the phone is currently made out of since it turned out to be so incredibly fragile. the antenna design will obviously be altered too - whether it be a different type of metal, a coating, or a complete rethinking of the antenna system.

As someone who wears contacts/glasses I can say that 3D TVs turn me off for this sole purpose. I wear contacts all day then glasses at night and stacking glasses PLUS 3D glasses is completely uncomfortable. (Avatar was completely ruined because I didn't wear contacts)

If I had to throw on another pair of glasses just to view my phone I wouldn't be too thrilled since glasses-free 3D is a quite expensive technology, as it stands today.

I don't think the Retina display can be made any better. its like 326ppi, which is apparently the most detail the human retina can see. So maybe they might include a bigger screen...I don't know.

I'd love to see a slightly bigger retina display, with 3D (without glasses like the 3DS has) Just imagine going to press the Phone icon and it (looks like it) pops out the screen, or going having all the icons pop out of the phone, then swipe to a new page, they all fall into the phone an the icons on the new page bounce right back up out the phone. Or having someone phone you and their name and number comes right out the screen. or maybe that could be a hologram screen.... :D
