The killer feature will be something none of us have even conceived; something we don't even know we want yet.

Apple Tablet = publishing's savior

Forget interactive album booklets.

I think the Apple Tablet+iTunes would/could/should be positioned as the "savior" of the publishing industry, just as the iPod+iTunes was positioned as the "savior" of the music industry. Both industries are struggling to adapt to the digitization of their product.

There should be a backend iTunes platform to buy books/periodicals newly designed for the tablet. (And the opportunity for widescreen video advertising -- as opposed to piddly, annoying, ignored little banner ads -- would help rejuvenate the advertising industry.)

A Kindle-killer.

And it should be called "Newton". :D

Bookstore, actually (and horizontal computing)

Imagine the Kindle App from the iPhone on a bigger form factor (like the Kindle DX), Plus a good PDF viewer (unlike the Kindle DX), plus a ebook reader for open formats (ePub), plus a web browser and email client.

With the size of Amazon's Kindle store. The time is ripe for a killer eBook Reader. And this, my friends, is it.

And BTW, didn't Apple spend a lot of time demoing a textbook reader for the iPhone. Anyone else think it would be stupid to read textbooks on a screen that small? Those guys are almost certainly early targets for the Apple Tablet.

You heard it here first (or second, or whatever)!

Agreed, BOOKS - Ihnatko's been leaving bread crumbs all over the internet. And Steve Jobs is about to drag the publishing industry into the digital age, as he's done for music, film and mobile phone industries in the past.

And the key to the success is an App Store Bookstore - Ihnatko's rumours of truckloads of books being delivered to Cupertino. And what was that story about a new data centre? As if that many people are going to want Mobile Me. A head on run at a bookstore? More likely. Amazon can either join (bigger Kindle app) or fight it out, but you can bet Steve and Apple won't do it until they think they can win. And they can win - they beat millions of free music sharing sites, they can shake Amazon's tree. Apple's seen how it's done and they can do it better, like they did with mp3 players.

Bookstore dreams aside - I'd like it to be a Mac & run iLife, but I can't see it. That's the now forgotten Touch netbook. Maybe next year, now.

The other killer technology will be horizontal computing. A tablet will get people used to the idea of laying the computer on it's back and working with a touch screen only. This is a necessary step towards the Touch iMac (and Pro?). You can't have a touch computer in the current form factor, people's arms will get tired. Once people get a taste for a more functional tablet, they be begging for a horizontal iMac with all Apple's great touch features (and not worry about the big-arse-table comments). A gateway device to touch computing proper, at last.

Right, BUT....

Apple would also release a Real CLOUD experience,
Then you will be able to use all Software on line via your .me account

Running Photoshop / Final Cut & Motion at the same time on a superfast server
All engages with a tablet

hehehe

... FLASH SUPPORT!

Flash is an overrated slow piece of crap. Most things done in Flash can be done using proper Javascript, CSS and markup as well. HTML 5 and JavaScript are the way to go...

This would be pretty cool

It's only miserable under OS X and sadly it has become the generic web standard for video.

I reboot into Windows and suddenly I get full frames and my fans aren't spinning up to 6200 RPM to playback flash on my MacBook. The difference is night and day.

Efficient user input (when standing up) would be great. There are so many potential niche applications that such a mobile terminal appliance could get into. I'd like to use such a thing for taking wine-tasting notes on. So whether that's an iPhone-style touch keyboard, voice-recognition or something else devilishly cunning, I don't mind - as long as it helps me get the job done.

Otherwise, just considering it as a bigger iPod touch wouldn't be so bad. Others have mentioned using it as photo album/video player and I suspect that if just 5% of iPhone users bought one (which they would) that'd be enough to make it a commercial success.

Well it will have to be SolidState HD, so maybe 64GB or 128GB. I think iTunes will be a huge part of it with new iChat and of course Multi-Touch.
I also think its gonna be called MacBook. I always wondered why MacBook Pro owns all apple notebooks now. Perfect timing to set a new standard for notebooks.

If the ability to tether an iPhone to it without additional charge from the carriers comes to pass, that will be a great feature / incentive. Perhaps this is something Steve Jobs and the company that shall not be named are collaborating over now.

We just don't know what else in store for this device yet. Whatever it does, it will do it superbly and with a premium style only Apple could imagine.

Maybe it isn't the reason why most people buy it, but the reason I bought the iPhone was indeed because it was one of the first phones to have a usable web browser. Multi-touch for zooming certainly made Mobile Safari great, but there are times where I wish I could do single-finger zooming like you can with Android's browser (when I'm doing one handed browsing and all I have is a thumb available).
.

You can already double tap to zoom in Mobile Safari.

Killer feature = variable size display

Apple doesn't quite have what I want yet.

I want to have one computer, not one of each size, and have the display be stretchable. It's in my pocket when not in use, say at iPhone size. If I need to look at my calendar, I might want to stretch it a few more inches to see the whole month at a glance. To work on a spreadsheet I might want to stretch it up to tablet size. A photo gallery of a friend's new baby? Stretch. Watching a movie on the plane? A little bigger. Editing my home movies or watching video at home? Stretch to maximum desktop size. All done? Back in the pocket.

If it can't stretch, let it fold out or roll out or grow and shrink like a sponge.

Whatever size tablet Apple creates, it will be the perfect size for me, but only a few times per day.

Before the iPhone came out, all I wanted was a cell phone with an iPod in it. The product that was released more than met my expectations, and more people want an iPhone than ever did before it came out because of all the features it had.

I don't know what the market is for tablets is now, but if Apple follows their own standard, it will create a market. I don't think I would have a use for a tablet, but who know, maybe Apple can come up with a reason I would want one.

In any case, not all Apple products have the "killer app." The Apple TV is still something I wouldn't buy.

The killer feature of the iPhone was its multitouch screen. Precise, responsive, and smooth. All other phones at the time had either clunky keyboards, or you had to use a stylus.

The iPhone didn't sell because of "Mobile Safari".

Safari was the reason i bought one.

I se the iphone as having multiple 'killer' features that allowed it go gain so much popularity. the top 3 being:

multi-touch interface
great mobile web experience
high-quality screen combined with ipod/video functionality.

Before the iPhones release other products on the market offered sub-par solutions to those three features. The release of the app store of course added a fourth that is allowed to shine thanks to those three.

I'm going to come out of left field and say something which would make me want one:

Make it water proof

Something I could have on the dinner table and not worry about spilling my drink on or being affected by moisture and is easy to clean food off of would be great.

That's a good idea. Water proof it so that I can take a bath with miss sexy tablet :D

White MacBook gets dropped, MacBook Pro becomes Macbook
MacBook touch replaces White Macbook

$300 varying pricepoints
$900 for Macbook touch
$1200 for MacBook
$1500 for MacBook Air

KILLER FEATURE IS KINDLE KILLER....

actually,

an entirely new OS/GUI that is a hybrid of iPhone OS and Mac OS X, with all the power of Mac OS X Snow Leopard and the touch input of iPhone OS packed into a small tablet with a powerful processor and good battery life...
