Mac Pro is made out of aluminum too, am I missing something here??:confused:

How often do you cuddle an MacPro? Hold it often? Get Burned?

I'd say it depends on what you want it for. You could soup up a 17" MBP and have something to go around with or get a MP if you are doing very heavy stuff that doesn't need to come with you.

I have the laptop in my sig combined w/ a 22" HP. I get the feel of a desktop with the mobile power of a pro laptop. I use mine for DVDripping, TV watching + recording, web work, iWork work... Nothing except for DVDripping/video encoding will really interfere with other tasks.

Maybe you could do something like that?

For what it's worth, I'm going to upgrade once I see quad-core MBPs. Unless they come up with a really cool, lower-cost ($600) tablet. Then, I'll get that + a MP.

I'd say a Mac Pro will FEEL faster.

I was really impressed with how quickly my new Quad booted up, right until I decided to race it against my macbook.
It was pretty much a draw, but the Pro still FEELS faster to boot when I'm sat watching it.

Who said anything about cuddling with either??

Trust me, a Mac Pro will feel a hundred times more "the snappy."

If I could I would get both but thats just being wasteful when one or the other computer can do everything I want to do.

So no haters, please. I can afford any computer I want, and will buy the one that I want. No lectures.

But what feels faster to use? A MacBook Pro 2.96 with 4GB RAM and the 7200RPM drive, or a Mac Pro 8-core 2.26 with 6GB RAM? :p

Feels faster?

I think that depends on the video card you get for the Mac Pro. Some will depend on the HDD in the laptop too tho.

Given equal video cards the MBP is going to rip that MP a new one! No doubt about it feeling and actually being faster!

When your MBP's HDD gets near full or overly fragmented this my no longer hold true tho.

You're nuts. Mobile processor vs. desktop processor (and a faster one at that). Mobile graphics vs. desktop graphics. Slow bus vs. fast bus. Faster memory. THe MP wins in every conceivable way.

2.93, SSD, 8GB RAM MacBook Pro, yessir.

I would think so yes. cmaier doesn't. It sounds like a fun test!

Hide the MBP, connect an external Mouse+KB+LCD, Then sit someone down for a few scripted tasks - switch and repeat - and then ask which was faster. :D

Ha that's right, if the OP can afford any computer, he should just spec them both then get a refund for the one he likes less :D

You guys are pretty funny ;) But seriously, has anyone actually tried both these computers to see which one is faster? There seems to be a lot of speculation, but no real answers...:(

Please define "faster". For everything except pro applications, you won't notice a difference.

If you run anything pro, HandBrake, or anything that can take advantage of multiple cores/threads, the Mac Pro is six times as fast.

That's because it's highly subjective, and really depends on what you do. Does your software take advantage of >2 cores and lots of RAM? You want the Mac Pro. Your software take advantage of higher clock speeds but fewer cores? You want the MBP.

Since you seem worried about it, I'll share my own story: I own a Mac Pro and a MacBook. While not quite the same comparison, the Mac Pro 'feels' considerably faster than the MacBook in almost every task except for simple ones such as using Mail, iTunes, Safari, or TextEdit. If I'm using HandBrake (as Tallest Skill said), Final Cut, or any one of the programs I use under Windows, the Mac Pro is considerably faster.

Based on your pre-emptive, defensive tone and your reluctance to say what you'll be using your computer for, I'm going to guess that you don't really need the power of either the MBP or the MP...and really...if you were already using resource-hogging "pro" apps, you'd probably be able to look at the specs of each computer and figure out an answer to your own question...(not judging or hating...just saying...)

If that's the case, get a MBP if you want to have the ability to take your work with you when you leave the house, or the MP if you're going to use it primarily at home.

The simple answer tho, is that the MP is a more powerful machine. Hope that helps...
