I am wondering as iPhone X is taller, what will be the visual effect when an app supporting iPhone 6 or even iPhone 5 resolution is running on iPhone X? Will we have a virtual home button for it?

Quite ugly then. Or I may delay buying iPhone X or buy an iPhone 8 plus instead.
It depends on what you think of the iPhone 6, 6s, and 7. From what we've seen, the iPhone X will be similar in size and design to those devices, but the screen will be larger. If the larger screen runs older apps at their original resolution with OLED black bars at the top and bottom, it would presumably look quite a bit like the previous three iPhones.

If you really want an "iPhone X", what's the point in buying an "iPhone 8 plus" just because it may take a little time for every app to be optimized? You can bet that the major ones will be ready to go on day 1. Settling for a phone that's not really what you want seems like an extreme way to avoid a temporary problem.

this.

i got an OLED tv and movies that don't fill up the whole screen are not as bad on it, because the "black" part isnt actually running/glowing. you don't really notice it anymore.

To be honest, your loss if that is the only reason for you not to get the iPhone X.

In my experiences with previous iPhones, the black bars were not that noticeable/annoying, but with the new OLED display, it will be less noticeable.

More importantly, App developers seem to be quite quick with updating their apps for the iPhone, so the major apps should be updated in due time.

“I don’t want to see ugly black bars temporarily while apps are updated so I’ll buy a phone that has the black bars permanently in place.”
Is that what you mean?

Yes. And in my country, apps may take months or even years to get updated. Perhaps I can already buy iPhone 9 at that time.

It'll probably take a year for most apps to update.

Maybe rich companies like Facebook, google, will have their apps ready in the coming weeks for the iPhone X design

But will apps supporting iPhone 6 resolution be able to adjust to iPhone X's resolution automatically?
