Probably black bars
It depends on what you think of the iPhone 6, 6s, and 7. From what we've seen, the iPhone X will be similar in size and design to those devices, but the screen will be larger. If the larger screen runs older apps at their original resolution with OLED black bars at the top and bottom, it would presumably look quite a bit like the previous three iPhones.Quite ugly then. Or I may delay buying iPhone X or buy an iPhone 8 plus instead.

“I don’t want to see ugly black bars temporarily while apps are updated so I’ll buy a phone that has the black bars permanently in place.”
Is that what you mean?
