I'm coming from a 13 mini and am wondering if I should finally upgrade with the Fold. The rumored screen size of 5.3" is 0.1" smaller than the 13 mini, but it's shorter and wider. Like half the YouTubers who are holding dummy units say the iPhone Ultra in folded mode will be horrible to use one handed (Jon Prosser, Unbox Therapy) and the other half (AppleTrack, MaxTech) are saying it will be perfect to use one handed lol. What do you guys think it will be like?

I know the form factor will be different, but I had a zfold7 as a work phone for a while, and I could use it one handed when folded pretty easily most of the time.

If it’s not too thick I think it will be fine, I find I have no problem reaching outside of the screen to the left on my Air but it is hard to reach the top of it. So shorter and wider would make it more suited for one handed use for me.

Yeah, that was my problem going from the 4S to the 5S and from the OGSE to the 12 mini. I can’t reach more than 75% of the screen height from any given position.

This is why I prefer the 4.7" 16:9 iPhone SE over the 5.4" 20:9 iPhone mini. The height of the mini makes reach more difficult than the SE for me. I find the reachability feature frustrating to use so that's no help either.

You can't imagine for yourself how bad it will be, one-handed?

Holding one half of it, with the other half flapping around?

Not being able to loosen your one-handed grip, trying to press things on any part of the screen, horizontal or vertical, for fear of dropping the whole thing on the floor?

Or maybe Siri will be enhanced to control it. 🤣 🤣 🤣

Seems obvious to me that this is not going to be a device suitable for one-handed use.

Oh, yeah, reachability is even more awkward than just shifting one’s grip on the thing… one-handedly.

But the SE is too wide for me to hold in one hand and reach more than halfway across without dropping it half the time.

Why speculate? Wait and see the new folding iPhone.

Some people can use Pro Max devices one handed some can’t, same can be said about smaller iPhones. You’d have to try it for yourself.

The fold will probably be a two handed device especially when fully open and using the inner display at the rumoured 7.8”. Depends on weight distribution, maybe there’ll be a one handed mode with the keyboard on one side of the screen. Speculation.

The mini is struggling and I’m almost considering buying a 17, only reason I haven’t is because I wonder if it’s worth the wait to see if the fold will be more onehandable than a regular 17/18

Well if it’s 5.3” folded then one handed should be fine with a footprint very close to the mini iPhones, but thicker.
It will be wider than a Pro Max though, Pro Max is 3.07 inches wide, the Fold will be 3.31 inches wide. It's a very different form factor, I hope you're right though

There was what I "imagined" prior to owning a folding phone...

And the actual experience now that I've used my Z Fold7 for months. It’s ideal for my work flow no matter how I hold it.
Z Fold 7 is narrow and tall when closed whereas all the mockups of the iPhone fold shows it is wide and short. Which is not conducive to one hand use.

Very true.

I’ve learned that the narrow and tall form factor is absolutely ideal for my work. It’s been an amazing experience that has exceeded my expectations.

Now being all-in on folding phones I was very eager to consider one from Apple. However that was before I saw their departure from the rather standard narrow and tall shape that’s shared by Samsung, Google, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus and a few others.

Perhaps it’s Apples desire to be different that influenced that wide, short, rather odd shape. For those without folding phone experience they simply don’t know any better. Plus the Apple logo sells phones no matter what. Different sells, it will be interesting to see how well.

My guess is that this form factor will result in the fold having a similar aspect ratio to an iPad mini in landscape when open there by making it a given most developers’ will have their apps work on the fold from the beginning.
