yes, but only because they knew apple was working on one. the first true inventor of the modern era smart watch would be pebble.

samsung is incapable of original ideas. apple too, sometimes. the difference is apple gets it right whilst Samsung makes poorly implemented copies. see anyone using Samsung's (or any other manufacturer's) version of TouchID?

Samsung: first to market with crap
Apple: last to market with gold

That does sound very fanboi'ish :(

iPad:
I'd not call two speakers, fitted right next to each other, so no stereo effect possible, and firing sideways away, not towards the listener, so to get some MONO volume, you have to cup your hand around the device to try and bounce the sound toward you. GOLD !

I'd call it utterly rubbish design, and worse though out than even a childs toy radio from a few decades ago.

If Samsung, or Moto, or LG, or anyone else (tech company or watchmaker) marketing a wearable rushes to market with an 18kt gold model and makes an appearance at a Parisian fashion boutique, then that would be legitimate copying. I think everyone expected Apple would have a fashion focus with their watch, but few were expecting them to go all out.

Apple basically ignored the tech companies in their announcement. That's different from the iPhone, in which they directly compared it to existing devices and said why they went in a different direction. With the Apple Watch, they are basically saying that the Gear, Moto 360, and other watches don't exist as far as they are concerned, or that at the very least that isn't the market they are competing for.

Interesting when what they basically did was sat back and looked at what everyone else was doing in the smart watch space and then copied. But of course Apple were the first blah blah, Apple do it right blah blah.

The digital crown is also very innovative. I've never seen anything like that on a watch before. I wonder where they got that idea from.

This thread is pointless because Samsung copied the Apple watch as soon as the rumours started that Apple were planning to make one.

Samsung's been making smartwatches and wristphones since 1998. Here's one from 2009:

I think the success of the Pebble in early 2012 woke everyone up again. That was long before Apple rumors started.

Yeah, because of what Cook had said about fashion, and because of what other makers had done, it was easy to predict that Apple would want to provide choices to attract people. But yes, the real gold was unexpected.

As for colors, Samsung already had sport colors, and even a pink gold case (not real gold) and white band.

But the first modern smartwatch with real gold is probably the 2012 I'M Watch from fashion conscious Italy.

The I'M sport models sell for $250. The titanium models for $900. Then you jump into the Jewel Collection, which starts at like $2K for silver, then $5K - $10K for various golds, up to $20K if you add diamonds, and I hear there's a $30K+ customized model where you basically tell them what materials you want them to make the case and band out of :)

(from Jewel Collection brochure - I'M watch in pink gold with white band) ~$5,000?

Interesting. Those prices are in line with John Gruber's speculation for the Apple Watch and Apple Watch Edition.

lol this thread is funny :)

I really do agree that Samsung and Google pinch a loooooot from Apple!!

I don't really know what they'll take first! Probably the straps because it's a nice easy one to get started xD

Nope. Apple smart watch rumor started as late as iPod nano with watch face.. and that was 2010. There were rumors long before even that. I guess the iPod nano was the one woke Pebble up.. that watch is the way Apple will go. I can't say for Pebble but when I first saw the iPod nano I was certain Apple will make a watch since then.

Seriously, though. Many of the features on the Apple Watch seem Samsung-esque in their gimmickry.

If Samsung had come up with the 'send your heartbeat' or the 'create a custom emoji' feature, we would all be laughing at them for creating such useless gimmicks. Even the use of the winder to zoom into maps and pictures seems a bit twee (and still not sure how that is going to work when you need to pan)
