I have the HDD inside the Time Capsule encrypted and it’s serving as my Time Machine. Since it’s encrypted I guess I wouldn’t have to worry about my data getting in the wrong hands.

I imagine it’s too complicated and not worth replacing the failed HDD with another one??

What are other ways of doing Time Machine that’s as easy and automatic as using a Time Capsule? I guess that would be on a cloud service such as Spider?

Get an external drive.
Get CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper.
Use either to create a bootable cloned backup.
DO NOT encrypt it. You WANT it to be "easy to access in a moment of extreme need".
If it has sensitive data on it, lock it up or hide it somewhere between updates.

If you search around, there are web sites that show how to open up the TC and replace the drive. Or you could just attach a USB drive to the TC and use that.

I do a CCC too with an external.

Never had to use it but like the idea that I can “go back in time” with Time Machine in the Time Capsule.
