Take it to the police. Get a receipt. Know before hand what the rules are about the return of found money.

IF the money is a) counterfeit b) marked by bank during a robbery c) marked by the police for a sting operation c) marked for etc etc, then you will be in for a lot of problems if you try to use it, or deposit it. Don't touch the money..... just take it to the cops. If you know a lawyer as a friend, or a cop as a friend, have them go in with you. Actually, just bring a friend in any case.

If you are lucky you will get it all back. If you are not so lucky, you won't. Regardless, you won't spend anytime in an interrogation room explaining why you were trying to pass funny money.

Plus, you will doing the right thing. Karma usually balances things out.

Single bill on the sidewalk in a denomination of $20 or less, I'll probably keep. There's no good way to prove ownership of a single found bill. Once multiple bills start to get involved then it becomes much easier since a lost sum of money the owner should have a decent idea of about how much and what kinds of bills.

For a ziplock baggie with $100 bills, I'd go to the police. That way as long as anyone comes looking for the money and knocking at my door no matter how reputable or dangerous they look I can honestly say, I turned it in to the police station and let them decide whether or not they want to pick it up. I'd hate to have a dangerous looking fellow come to the door and then get all nervous about lying that I didn't find the money, and yes that is my new MBP and 30" cinema display :D.

I would take it to the police. If no one claims it or there is nothing wrong with it, you could get to keep it anyway!

Besides, it'll put your mind at rest and generally be the easiest option.

I'll present an alternative scenario just for the hell of it :p

Take the money, buy a full rack of assault rifles. AR-15, Sig 552, SKS-47, a few H&K MP5s...

Buy an intercom system and a *very* strong front door. Somebody stops by very pissed off, wanting their money back (most likely drug dealers with guns), answer the door with your new toys and forcibly convince them that they have the wrong address.

If you live in Texas, shoot them, drag them into your house and call the police for breaking and entering. ;)

Spend the rest of the money on whatever you want.

is that you, Tony Montana?

what should i do?

Ask yourself what kind a person you are...

The money is not yours, and if the owner should try to reclaim it from you in the future then you want to be sure you have it OR had made reasonable attempts to return the money.

I would notify the police of found money, the location found and approximate amount. However I would try to keep possession of the money - incase some gun carrying drug dealer comes knocking wanting his/her money back...

Well they had some people here find some money of the street recently, it was all bogus.

Which led to some arrests for the people trying to spend it.

Perhaps the OP should call a lawyer about it.

Large sums of money tend to be called "drug money" by the police these days, so turning it in will likely be just as good as giving it to them with no expectations of keeping unclaimed money.

If it is found on your property, keep it. Must be somebody telling you to clean the darn yard up.

I would do the right thing and keep it:)

Yea do the right thing don't be a twerp - Karma has taken care of you!
Hell if i found a large amount of money, the last thing i would do is take it to my bank - it could be counterfeit or have that invisible ink stuff. Go shopping! Buy gifts!

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished!

There is no way I would get law enforcement involved.

If it's that much money, there will be a story in the paper about it.

Otherwise it's yours.

I would pop it under some floorboards and leave it for a year, once you know there are no strings attached then consider spending it or saving it in a bank account.

At Wal-Mart, if a customer finds money the store takes the money and keeps it for a period of time (I don't know how long they actually keep it). From what I know from working there in the past it didn't matter how much money they do not take the money to the police. If no one claimed the money Wal-Mart took the money. It wasn't Wal-Mart's money anymore than it was the person who turned the money in.

Now for me, it would depend on the amount of Money. It was $1000 or less I might just keep it. If it was more I might consider taking it to the police but that would be a very hard choice to make. As pointed out, Drug money or not the police might call it that and keep it.

the devil on the side of my shoulder is ripping it to shreads

if this happened to me i can guarantee that i would be in your position, but the good side of me would take it to the police. i mean you don't just drop a bag of that kind of money, it's completely different if it's a full wallet.

it sounds like drug money. It probably got tossed out the window running from the cops. it could be evidence. might be a good idea to call the cops. personally i would never want money that was gotten by destroying my neighborhood.

my sister found a purse with 4000.00 USD in it once. it was in a grocery store parking lot that was in the same plaza as a bank. a women had taken the money out to remodel her kitchen. she went into the grocery store after she had stopped in the bank and left her purse in a carriage.

my sister contacted the owner and returned it. they were an older couple. for a reward they offered my sister 20.00 USD. which i thought was pretty funny but the reward money was never the point so. anyway they were very very happy to get it back.
