Jeff Bezos is now the richest person in modern history. He reportedly earns a million dollars every 4 minutes and 20 seconds. If you had riches like that, what would you do with it all?

You could quit your job, buy 5 mansions and 20 cars the first week, purchase every top-of-the-line tech product, and hire a full-time chef, a butler, a chauffeur, a personal trainer, a personal banker (pick a trustworthy one!), and a personal assistant or two. Maybe buy a plane too. But then comes another week and another week, with cash coming in all the time. You could buy these same things for all of your friends and family too, and buy an island to host some fancy parties. And then what?

You could stash your money away for your heirs, never spending more than you do now. But probably not.

You could play "double or nothing" in the stock market and try to get even richer. Perhaps invest it all in bitcoin. Or buy some big-name companies and try to run them. Maybe you'd get richer and maybe you'd go broke.

Of course, here's your chance to do something wonderful for the world. There are so many charitable causes that it could be very hard to pick one or a few to support.

What would you actually do if you were that rich?

Charity would certainly be up there. Hard to choose a cause though as their are many worthy ones.

Buy your favourite sports team maybe? I know mine (West Ham) could use a few mill!

Maybe study things you always wanted to learn about?

But I'm sure a good deal would get blown at the Austin Martin garage, Apple Store and Nikon store!

Take care of my family and friends. Quit my job.

Help cats, vets and kids in need. Help some friends of the family and a local business that helped us. Donate to food banks.

Bank a lot.

Buy a property.

Have fun and allow for my family to do the same.

A million dollars every four minutes and twenty seconds? I actually think that kind of wealth would be toxic over time. Charity? It's been noted that wealthy people mostly donate to charities that benefit themselves or others of their kind. Giving to opera houses, fine art museums, symphonies etc. Sure, anybody can go to these places but regular guys aren't interested or really have to stretch to attend. Those kinds of thing are what the wealthy attend and what the wealthy get points for donating to. They tend not to give to organizations that benefit the common rabble. Mmmm...rabble....that's me, I guess.

I'd have to research it but I think the old robber barons did more things to benefit the commoners. Not sure about that.

What could Bezos et.al do? ???? Fix pot holes? Improve sewers? Create really nice parks? Hire people to paint poor people's houses?

I think lots of the present uber wealthy just use their money to create more paper wealth.

What would I do? Well, I have a ton of vices that are always calling to me. But I don't think I could tolerate any of them at what I could obtain them at a million dollars every four minutes and twenty seconds.

In the end, I'd probably try to obtain power and eliminate anyone that got in the way. :) Cuz I'm not that nice a guy. :)

My first thought is to buy a modest house in Vancouver, B.C., but I don't think that's enough money to do that.

My second thought is to buy out all the North Korean elite in exchange for them walking away so that the people can be free and there can be peaceful transition to reunification.

My third thought is maybe that I might actually pony up for CBS All Access so I could watch Star Trek. Maybe.

I obviously haven't given this much thought at all.

Yeah, all that money probably wouldn't get you anything but a small rental in San Francisco.

Buy out the North Korean leadership? Maybe. But all that power would be hard to give up. Power over life and death. I wonder if they would let you buy them out. Then reunification? Sounds good but I wonder if that wouldn't kill South Korea's economy. That's a lot of North Koreans to assimilate. The North Koreans aren't just going to charge in there and be productive. They would spend a long time in culture shock, I think. Then you have to retrain them in a modern economy. A lot wouldn't make it very successfully, I think.

Well yeah, there's a lot of detail to go over and there is bound to be unforseen problems along the way too. I still think it would be an improvement over how it is now.

Just like when the holocaust survivors were liberated from their camps, they started eating too much food and many of them died directly from that. It sucks, but you do your best and on the whole try to make it better for everyone.

In any case, all three of my responses were really meant tongue in cheek. My real response is fairly boring, which is to take care of my family and long-time friends, live it up a bit, and give most of it to the Gates Foundation.

You'd get board pretty quick..

Being the richest, i know i would have limits.. After you bought every single thing you can imagine *use, (excludes just because you have money to throw around for no reason other than to announce you are rich), you'd get board..

I wonder how happy those people really are...... in the long term.

At some stage, enough must be enough. There'd be no purpose to life otherwise if you have all that money... Sure, you can quit ya job. (That's probably about the only thing that will make al that money go)

Besides, paying it on taxes that is...

Net worth: US$150.5 billion (2018) .If Apple gets to 1 trillion, then they would still be ahead.

Okay, I get it. This is probably not meant to be a serious topic. Fun fantasy. North Korea has always bothered me. So I bit. As per unification, I won't argue against your premise. Unify and take the hit.

Two chicks at the same time.

On a more serious note. I'm not interested in a bunch of stuff. The only frivolous thing I can think of would be to build myself a castle and moat. Also a giant hedge maze. I mean an epic hedge maze. Like WTF is that person thinking proportions. Perhaps an old mine and turn it into an military grade, 25 year self sustained, end of the world fallout shelter.

Assuming his current wealth and income. Pay for heavy lobbying to clear the red tape for molten salt reactors, research on improving the tech and building them. Medical research focused on finding cures not treatments of symptoms. Probably something similar to SpaceX.

It occurs to me that I could spent lots of my millions helping cities relocate overhead power and telephone lines underground. In cities where those wires are running along every street and crisscrossing every intersection, I think it's a huge improvement to remove those eyesores. Maybe people would live together in harmony if only their neighborhoods had a clear view of the sky!

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I maze do big that people would have to sign waivers to go into it. "Two years ago this couple went in there and we still haven't found them yet!"

Kind of like the Paris catacombs. lol There was a hospital worker who took his break down in the catacombs. Apparently he went exploring. And they never found him!

A placid environment breeds a placid mind.

Thanks for the question.
I found new questions to ask myself.
This is literally to inspect where we stand in our life purpose.
And how we would expand it with all money possible available.

make a difference in the world for sure , education and help for the poor for starters, the island sounds like fun.

Time. Time is the most important thing. Wealthy people are often very busy with their businesses, but real happiness can be found in spending time with the people you love.

So if I had that much money, I’d make sure I have as much time as possible. Then I would be free to do whatever the heck I want (which might also still include the job).

Well, I like to travel, but I don't like to deal with the hassle of traveling. So I'd buy a private jet and then have houses in various countries and locations. I would have a main house, though, with an enormous and expansive library. That would be just about perfect.

And I'd, you know, do some good with the rest of it :D

I’d buy CNN and assign Jim Acosta to Bishop Rock.
Oh ho! So we can go that route, eh? Well then, I'd buy Twitter and plug the leak destabilizing our government.:D

This is always a fun topic! Like someone said earlier, I probably wouldn't have that much money, as I couldn't live with myself being the richest man in the world while my workers can't afford to pay their bills. I digress...

1) Get a financial planner. I happen to know several that I would absolutely trust with that much money. I'd make sure I signed all the checks though :)
2) May or may not retire my mom. My dad passed away a year ago next week, and I don't know if all that time on her hands would be good or bad lol. She would definitely be taken care of.
3) Buy the house my family lives in now. They have a killer rent deal on a massive house, and my sister/her family and my mom are all able to live there comfortably.
4) Pay off my car, my student loans, credit card debt, etc.
5) Find a house in SF that would allow me to build a recording studio. I'd love to pour some money into some recording studios around the Bay as well, provided that they don't raise their prices for local bands.
6) I'd quit my job and do music full-time. I'd also like to support a few of my friends who are pursuing music by giving them a steady paycheck (~$50k/year?) so they could focus on their careers.
7) Two shopping sprees: Guitar Center. Apple Store.
8) Charity/giving-wise, I'd like to pour quite a bit of money into four things things: Providing undocumented immigrants with quality lawyers, housing non-profits, spending money to get money out of politics (whether that's by lobbying against... lobbying lol... or giving money to liberal and progressive candidates with no strings attached), and public education. I would love to pledge continued funding for a few underprivileged schools and upgrade their networks, have a one-to-one iPad/MacBook program for the students and teachers, and ensure that they have access to new textbooks.

I'm sure there are other things, but I honestly think having that much money would be a huge burden.

I agree with you. I’m not jelous, but no human being is helped by this amount of wealth. IMO, it is toxic to every human quality.
