I have the opportunity to buy a very nice one for ~$250. I know there are a lot of nice monitors for that price - it's worth noting I largely just want it for docking purposes for my MBP every once in a while.

I passed on two of these for $10 last year at a goodwill thrift store. I almost bought them just because. But my rational side said I already have two good LCD's on my machine and I couldn't justify paying $10 on older screens just to get an Apple logo.

So... I guess that means not worth $5 each to me.

But, if it's what you really want, and it's worth the money for you, then it's really your decision.

I'm not going to bad talk them.

These displays on the used market still command a pretty hefty premium for an eight-year old monitor. This appears to be a fairly good price. It sounds as if you've done your research on these, but since you mentioned that you're planning to take advantage of this as a dock it's worth pointing out the USB ports are USB 2. I've lost track of the magsafe port permutations, so you may want to make sure the magsafe version on this monitor will work with your MBP or if you'll need an adaptor.

I have one of these monitors. It's still a very nice one, though newer monitors are better. The magsafe connector is version 1, so if you want to use it as a charger, you need an adapter. My wife currently uses mine on her MacBook Air and loves it.
