I have 5. Girlfriend and others have 4S.

Trust me, theres not much difference,

9mbps HSPA+ to 50mbps LTE sounds big, but when using it? Maps, webpages, meh.
camera is about the same
Same pixel density
Both dual core, and 4S doesn't struggle with any apps... So.... Meh

My 5 looks great on paper. And it was a great upgrade from a 4: but compared to daily use on a 4S... Meh.
I just don't see the point of waiting. My sleep button is semi functional and it just bugs me. If the 5s really interests me when it comes out I'll just sell my 5 and buy the 5s.

I was in the same position the other week and just jumped now.
I had a 5 at launch and took it back due to some reasons I was not willing to deal with at the time and went back to a 4s.
Since then I have been dying for another 5. I got my gf a 5 to upgrade her 4 about 2 months ago and that sealed the deal for me jumping back on a 5 again.

The 5S I am willing to deal without now. If I get hard pressed again, I will just pay out and get it at that time, but I cannot imagine anything super crazy to make me go nuts to jump.

What would you rather do: iPhone 5 right now for $99 or wait and pay $236 for...

If you can afford to put more down later I would wait. With the 5S or whatever Apple calls it being only a few short months from being released it will be better to wait a get the latest iPhone. Just my 2¢ worth.

Wait it out until the 5S is announced. See if you like what the updates provide over the iphone 5, than make a decision to upgrade to the 5S / 5 / or even perhaps go with the 4S. ;)

Here's a question for the OP:

When the iPhone 5S (or whatever it may be called) comes out, would you be fine with just getting the iPhone 5 for $99?

For me, I would rather have the latest becuase I know it will last longer over time with newer iOS and when the iP5 came out and new iOS stuff, the 4S and 5 got it but NOT the iP4 (which I have).

My wife says she doesn't NEED the latest phone and is fine with the reduced price/last-year model and as such she decided to upgrade her 3GS to the iP5 since she would get the 5 for the same price when I decided to buy when the next phone comes out.

For me, as a designer and one that loves to take photos and do all sorts of stuff on my phone, I like the upgraded goodies. So, I wait. (and since work will be buying me a phone, I may as well wait as the difference in price is moot) but I would be waiting anyway...and hoping they up the SPACE in the next release.

I have a 4, which I love. I will not buy a 5 now, but am seriously considering a 5S in the fall. Because I will be locked into a two year contract with the 5S, when I upgrade in 2015, I believe I will be able to sell my 5S for more than I could sell the 5.

If I would have upgraded to the 5 last fall, I probably could have sold my 4 for at least $300. Now the price has dropped to $200, and of course will be much lower after the 5S comes out.

In the future I plan to upgrade every two years so that I can get the most money for my old phone.

Another reason I want to wait is for the ios7. I know the 5 can be updated to the new ios, but I've always regretted updating my iph4 to ios5. It just didn't work as smoothly. So I'd rather wait to have the phone that is built for the ios7.

I'm in a similar dilemma, but I've decided that the features in the iPhone 5S probably won't be worth the three month wait. I'm going to purchase an iPhone 5 soon.

I'd go with the 5 now - it's a great phone and the 5s really won't have any must have features in my opinion. In fact, I just picked my wife up a 5 last weekend (white 32gb) to replace her old 4s that was starting to act up (she dropped it several times).

Neither. I love my 4s and will hang on to it until it falls apart.

I would probably love mine if I got the 32 or 64GB models. I was a cheapskate and got the 16GB model. So now I am constantly out of storage space, and I definitely need an upgrade.

:(

C'mon guys, lets say you HAD to chose between those two options (5 now for $99 or wait 3 months to pay $236 for the 5s). What would it be?

Are they otherwise comparable? Same storage? We aren't comparing a 16GB 5 with a 32GB 5s?

Yeah, they are the same.

Just a 16gb 5 ($99 w/ no upgrade fee) vs a 16gb 5s ($199 w/ a $36 upgrade fee).

Thanks for taking the time to respond everyone :)

And then pay full retail for the replacement.

Exactly. If you buy the 5 now you will pay $99 + $50 in taxes. Once the 5s comes out the most I would expect to get for selling the iPhone 5 on Craigslist is $400. Then you go and buy a 5s at full retail paying an additional $650 + $50 in taxes. So in total you ended up spending $850 and got $400 of it back.

Doesn't make financial sense to do that, so this decision would be final for 2 years without changing phones.

I'd wait & pay 700+ for the 5S off contract

Why pay for a phone off contract? For most customers that's simply throwing away free money if you don't take advantage of the upgrade subsidy. I'm on a family plan and pay $40 a month for my line and unlimited data so its not like going prepaid would help me save any money.

Why is that?

Thanks for the replies :)

Think about that if you are going to be stuck with hardware for 2 years 24 months would you rather have something old and almost outdated the day you buy it, or something new and fresh.

Of course if you have a budget then go with the cheaper phone, but if you can swing the extra costs it is well worth getting the latest and greatest IMO

iPhone 5s. I am gritting my teeth with my iPhone 4s. Why am I gritting my teeth? Because I have no more storage left, and I am a shutter bug. I love taking photos and videos, and I was an idiot and got the 16GB model. So, I will wait, and hope that maybe, just maybe there will be a 128GB model. Otherwise, I will get the 64GB iPhone 5s. The other perk are the rumors for a much improved camera, as well as a small processor bump and maybe more system memory (ram). I do not have many performance issues with the 4s, until I am at less than 400mb of storage left, then I start noticing odd behavior and random crashes.

Honestly, since it looks like we are going to just get an "S" update with the next iPhone, and it is likely about 2 1/2 to 3 months away, I would have no issue getting a 5 now. The iPhone 5 is not going to be that outdated when the 5S comes out. The 5 will run iOS 7 just fine so you will have a fairly up to date phone for awhile. Unless you are somebody that must have the latest and greatest the iPhone 5 deals out there right now are pretty sweet.

I will say the only thing that might be worth waiting to see on the 5S is to see if they go to 32,64,128 for storage, thus making the 32gb version the $199 phone. If that is the case the 5S would be the better deal, IMO.
