I'm just curious as to when members here first started using iPhone.

It's been a pretty interesting 12 years since Jobs wowed the world with the original.

Obviously AT&T had the early monopoly which really limited the number of people that bought it because of those horrible termination fees the cellular industry used to slap us with.

I was lucky enough to have AT&T back then and started with the original and haven't missed a main model to this point.

I didn't add models like 2G, 3G, or 4 to the poll because Apple branched the iPhone line with the SE and XR models along with different screen sizes, so the year is main data point.

My first iPhone was the iPhone 3G on launch day in July 2008, here in Japan, as it was the first iPhone available here. I've purchased every iPhone since, on launch day, until last year (kept my iPhone X for two years) and will get my pre-ordered iPhone 11 Pro Max tomorrow. Can't wait!

I remember Apple and AT&T having a near riot on their hands because the activation servers crashed.
I was stuck in the Bullring Apple Store all day while they attempted to sort mine as the O2 servers in the UK also went down. I eventually left the store without activation and couldn't use the phone until the following afternoon. It wasn't the best introduction to the iPhone but I did get a bundle of accessories to compensate my inconvenience.

Mine was 2011, the first iPhone on Verizon, iPhone 4. That’s the only iPhone I never traded, I still have it.

3G in 09. I remember not wanting the original because it didn’t have 3G capability and I waited until I had paid off my blackberry in 09 to get the 3G iPhone. Several month later I paid through the nose to upgrade to the 3GS at launch and have had every model year since.

I had a phone obsession / addiction problem in the mid 2000s. The plan I was on with AT&T at the time didn't limit my upgrades. It was a business plan I somehow qualified for. I could get a new phone whenever I wanted at the reduced price. A couple months before the original iPhone came could I'd gotten 3 phones. I was obsessed with the newest phones, trying to find the perfect one. They'd all let me down in one way or another. If I remember correctly, I got a Samsung Blackjack (II?) and Motorola Q within 2 weeks of each other. I used both phones trying to determine which I liked best. When the original iPhone came out I was I was very disappointed it was on Edge. I'd been using 3G phones for a while so I passed.

When the 3G iPhone came out I got it and have upgraded to the newest iPhone every year since. I'm still slightly obsessed with phones but only iPhones ;)

OP, this is a great and interesting poll but I think more people will answer if you put the model that was available next to each year. It was easy for me since I know that I got the second Iphone but imagine if you got the iphone 5 for the first time. It would require some research.

iPhone 4 2010.

I bought a Nokia as my first smartphone and returned it the same day for an iPhone.

Used Android devices a few years back as a student as it was a cheaper option but back with Apple since finances are different.
