i agree that the new macbook is a reasonable price for what you're getting, that's not my beef. My beef is that it seems to have taken a step towards becoming a 'prosumer' product, rather than a consumer product. next year i'm off to uni and i need laptop. after making the switch last year i know i could never go back to windows, and at the same time i know i cannot resist the new macbook. So i'm now trying to figure out how much i can get for my 24" iMac :p ah well, if i get a macbook soon i can take it into school and claim bragging rights :)

I don't think they're being aggressive in their pricing. My 12" PowerBook costed less than the new low-end MacBook. I bet they'll drop the price once the WhiteBooks are gone and buried. They always start at the premium and watch what the marketplace dictates to them.

From my experience, a Windows laptop will last you about 2-3 years (optimistically) before becoming ridiculously obsolete and bogged down with all kinds of wear and tear. You might actually be lucky to have it last that long. With a MacBook, it's basically guaranteed to last you through uni and then some, if you take care of it.

Not to mention if you go for the upper-level MacBook Pro... Lots of the high-end PowerBooks from 4-5 years ago still have somewhat comparable specs with the entry-level MacBooks now.

Here in New Zealand it's worse...

The mid range last gen (white 2.4ghz) used to be between NZD 1850-1950 and now they are trying to sell us the bottom of the range for the same price!

I am a bit scared with the prices... 2.4 is 100$ more expensive than blackbook, right? In Croatia, blackbook was 12000hrk-around 2300$...
they still havent anounced pricing for new models but I am pretty scared...

i do hate how apple have a massive 30% profit on everything they sell... worth it but!!

I think price of parts is always around 50% of product with apple, what is left is R&D, marketing and sales costs(and fuel for SJ's jet plane :-D). so i think that profit is little bit smaller than 30%....

They're definitely overpriced--in the US and particularly overseas. The best way to make your voice heard, though, is to not buy a laptop you don't think is worth the cost. My 2007 Macbook is still going fine, despite cracking, the way they all do. But if it died tomorrow and I needed a new laptop, I'd buy a refurb MB/P or a Thinkpad. There's no way I'd buy one of the new models, because A.) they're ugly, and B.) they're overpriced. Decide what's most important to you, and everything else falls into place.

Aluminum is not that expensive, I mean I almost the same amount in my 12 pack of Dr. Pepper

Like to know what kind of 12 inch powerbook you got because mine cost $1699. ha-ha.
