I have an iPhone 8. I'm thinking of getting a version of the iPhone 11. But the rumors say that next year every iPhone will have 5G.

I talk, text, take photos and use Apple maps with my iPhone 8. I buy apps and download their updates. Once or twice I have streamed video content on my iPhone 8. Even then, I used wifi.

As far as I know, 5G increases data speeds. So is it really important to me? I don't do data intensive things on my iPhone. It would be fun to get some version of the iPhone 11. But if somebody has a reason why G5 is important to my use case I'll wait until next year to upgrade my phone.

you don't do enough to need it

we better have have 100% unlimited data plans or you will chew up our gb's quickly---so some say

You’ll get a faster browsing experience with 5G but the rollout will take time and there isn’t concrete evidence saying Apple will have 5G phones next year.

5G won’t even be useful for a while, as it’s not widely supported. If you want an 11 now, I say go for it.

Thanks.

Yeah, I figured I just do not use data enough on my phone for 5G to make much of a difference.

Not likely I'll ever watch a movie on my phone. I'll pull out my iPad for that.

Now I just need to bite the money bullet and get one of the 11s. The 11 Pro seems ideal except for the cost and I'm worried about PWM.

There’s a YouTuber named zollotech who suffered from pwm on the last two years of oled on iPhones. He said this years iPhone oleds are much better and he doesn’t have that issue now. I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple made the screens warmer this year to help counter eye issues in general. Just a theory though

5G good good for faster downloads
AR VR AI. more to come as time goes on
At this point in time not much

What's 5G gonna do for me?

Someday it will allow you to get reception in the doctors office, hospital, and school buildings dead space where you couldn’t before. As example.

But this won’t be true for 2 years to come since it will be in heavier congested areas first.

I think it took me 2 1/2 years to actually get 4G on my phone after it was released.

Honestly with 4G LTE how often has that been the bottleneck in regards to streaming or downloading content anyway? 99% of the time the service i am using is far slower then my actual LTE connection.

Also until unlimited internet usage becomes as mainstream as calls and texts I don’t see the point. All the carriers in the UK for example are still pairing absurd plans with the latest phones offering a measly 1GB of data a month.

im waiting for next year not because of 5G, but because apple finally going back to qualcomm, the x55 is faster and more reliable than intel XMM 7660 used in the 11s

that should be the reason why you might want to wait til next year, not because of 5G, but because iphone 12 will have better coverage for 4g lte

The question isn't what is 5G gonna do for me, but what are you gonna do for 5G?

Excellent point. lte and calls should be superior. I also do not care about 5g at all. but a Qualcomm modem? Yeah.

After 2 Intel 8+ I got a Qualcomm and don’t notice a drastic difference.

I’m not excited for it all all. Speeds are fast enough for me 99% of the time even with one bar.

Most folks who never had bad reception won’t notice, low reception strength is where Qualcomm outshine intel. I switched from intel iPhone 7to Qualcomm iPhone 7 and the difference was dramatic. I was not able to reception in elevators or basement in my building with the intel phone.
There are enough signal comparison tests and charts out there to prove Qualcomm is noticeably better than intel in modem

I feel that the importance of 5g isn’t so much what it can improve today, but also in what new use cases it could enable in the future.

For example, Netflix and live streaming wouldn’t have taken off if we were stuck with 3G speeds on our mobile devices, just as 3G made web browsing on our smartphones tolerable. It’s very possible that 5g could usher in new business models that wouldn’t have been feasible under current 4g constraints. I can’t think of any right now, but I am sure they exist.

So it feels like a chicken and egg scenario again. We are waiting for a “killer app” to justify 5g, while businesses are waiting for a critical mass of 5g users first.

Much better use at home where you can ditch slow cable for much faster wireless. Wonder why Xfinity and Spectrum are trying to get into wireless service.

The US puzzles me sometimes. On one hand, you are home to innovative companies such as Apple, google, Uber and amazon. On the other hand, I am enjoying 1 gb optic fiber internet here in Singapore as an entry level plan, it’s fast enough for streaming 4K and torrents and everything I do, and the idea of data caps on something as basic as home internet simply boggles the mind.

My work is a dead zone and I have the same 1 to maybe 2 bars here that I got on my intel Xs max, 11 and both of my previous 8+. Maybe it’s down to the T-Mobile deadzone
