I've probably had over a dozen over the years and the best so far is my Jack Spade messenger. Stylish, functional, and economical.

I love my STM Loft bag. Room for my laptop, power charger, pads and a book (depending on size). I couldn't find the color scheme of mine though; mine is a Grey on Light Grey design (light grey in place of the orange in regards to the linked bag). It has held up very well and the padding for the laptop is great. The down side is you will not fit many books in it. Carrying books was not a concern for me as I had a office that I kept most of my books in (I was GA at the time).

Also the price for the STM bags is quite affordable, ~$55.

+1 for STM. It's a little bit more than other bags around, but everything fits perfectly (no room for papers, files etc as mentioned above) but seeing as it's so small it's easy to take another bag with you.

One of the other good things is that it doesn't look like a laptop bag, (the laptop is stored upright as opposed to the more usual horizontal way) so it's less likely to be stolen.

I have a Crumpler backpack and it's by far the best bag I've ever had. I've flirted around with messenger style bags but they're just not comfortable and are awkward.

Hey i0nic, which backpack do you have? just curious

i just ordered a crumpler messenger bag - the "considerable embarrassment" for my 15" MBP. I've heard a lot of good stuff about their bags.

I use the Axio Fuse II backpack, one of the best out there.

I will also be attending Uni in August. The thing is, I ride a Sportbike (Yamaha R1), and it's really fast, which can sometimes cause for a bumpy ride. Does this bag keep the laptop snug, and safe? Does it have enough room for a notepad, 15" notebook, power adapter, and a school book?
Thanks to all for the good suggestions.

Oh, I swear by my STM. Don't forget the STM Alley, though. It's basically the same bag as the Loft, but not as hip and a little less expensive. And as far as backpacks go, I like the Evolution.

Too bad they discontinued the Sphere backpack, though. :(

It's extremely secure, there's a clip-on chest belt thingy as well. Highly recommended. The backpack is fully padded and has loads of space for your books and gears.

I've been reading this thread and been looking for a solution to my own problem. I have a backpack and a messenger bag that I use depending on how much other stuff I'm carrying. With my old, now defunct PB, I had an incase sleeve which I just shoved into either bag. This was clearly foolish, since the sleeve was very thin and the PB suffered a lot of knocks. Is there anything like the Tom Bihn hard sleeves that can be used both horizontally and vertically? Their site says each one will only work well in one direction. If not, are there any messenger/courier style bags that have detachable sleeves that will work well in a backpack?

I'm debating between the Spade bag, and a Crumpler/Bailey/Chrome bag + sleeve. Any recommendations? I'd also like a very sturdy sleeve that can stand up to backpack + book use

PS, how come the Spade bag is $185 in the physical Apple Store, but $150 online?
