I got the base model iMac, and am considering an external drive mainly to back up photos I'm gonna load on here. I'm really challenged with stuff like this (I've used mostly iPads for the last 5 years or so, even though I had an iMac for working from home), so I'd love some suggestions, and directions, on how to make my photos back up to another drive.

I have used the Samsung T5 for several years with good results.

If you want something a little cheaper...

for backup, a HD drive, eg the WD as suggested above is sufficient.
Another alternative would be to backup to iCloud.
iCloud has the other advantage that if you use the Photos app (not clear from your post), it syncs photos between iPhone, iPad and Mac ...

Samsung T7 550gb £71 amazon, my photos library goes on that and backed up on cloud and also A Western digital hdd for secondary backup.

Going to kinda agree with the Samsung suggestions, however...

I'm using a Samsung as primary storage for my Photos library, to save space on the internal drive of the MacBook.

For backing Samsung up, I'm using a couple of hard drives ($/GB can't be beat, and no need for speed for mere backups).

ADD: also have this Lexar SSD (got it at a really low price 1.5yr ago), which I've been happy with.

ADD2: and can also fallback to a hard drive and Time Machine. Get the photos backed up at same time everything else gets backed up.

the ideal would be 2 external + 1 iCloud:

1) 1TB HDD for complete backup of your mac using Time Machine
2) 256GB or 500GB SSD for a *bootable* copy of your entire iMac using Carbon Copy Cloner
3) your entire iMac + additional photos on iCloud

that way you can:
a) restore your iMac in case of failure using #1 or #2 or #3
b) continue to use your mac in case of failure by booting on #2

Encrypt #2 using at least a 20-characters-length password and put in your car in case your iMac and backups are stolen or fire

LOL that is like a foreign language to me. ;-p

Actually I understand a little of it, but it's probably overkill for my needs. I mostly just care about my photos.

Well I do have the cloud - I don't particularly like my photos to be on all my devices, and I'm honestly not sure I'm clear on exactly how the cloud works other than for backing up my devices to restore from, but I do pay for cloud storage.

If you’re already paying for it, why not use it for backup?
i don’t personally use iCloud beyond the 5GB free so honestly don’t know how to configure TM to back up to iCloud…

Do you have any other Apple devices besides the iMac and iPad? Do you utilize iCloud for your cloud service? How many GB worth of photos do you have?

I doubt I’m paying for enough to back up much. I think I pay 99 cents or 1.99 a month or something, so not a lot more than the free. And I honestly just don’t know how to get in there and pick and choose what to back up, although I could take some time to figure it out I’m sure. I’ve just been lazy about it since I’ve had hard backups.

It can be overwhelming, so don’t be discouraged. Yes, iCloud stores your data in the cloud like a backup, but I look at iCloud more as an easy way to sync data between devices. I have a MacBook that syncs with my iMac and other devices, and in addition I make a hard backup on a regular schedule. I don’t think relying on iCloud as your only backup solution is a good idea — utilizing iCloud along with a hard backup is recommended.

Regarding your question about photos — how many GB of photos do you have, and do you regularly need to access them? If you don’t need to access them, and just want to archive them, buying two external hard drives would be a simple solution (two drives with the same data on each in case one fails).

Let me know your photo storage needs and I can research which ones would be a good fit.

I am a photographer and have many thousands of photos.

I have a SmugMug site with unlimited uploads which in effect is my cloud storage - iCloud for you? For local storage I have 2 regular external HD (1 for storage and 1 for back up), but I wouldn’t waste money on an SSD simply for storage. I use an SSD for temporary post production purposes. Once photos are post processed they go on the regular HD.

Well, right now most of them are on flash drives, and I have them sorted by year I think. None of the drives is more than 16 gb.

My goals, and the main reason I bought this new iMac when most of my needs are handled with an iPad, is to put photos on here, and purge, only keeping the ones that are really worth keeping (I feel like with digital we tend to keep way more than necessary). I plan to make hard photo books with the favorites, and then store those and others I want to keep. I'd actually be okay putting them on a hard drive and then keeping the flash drives, but IDK how reasonable that is anymore.

I then have to tackle videos of my grandkids, which is gonna be a whole 'nuther ballgame, although I already have most sorted by kid onto flash drives as well. Thinking I'll do some sort of movie collection of the videos I have of each child and then figure out a good way to store that.

It's my summer project, but who am I kidding - it'll probably take me 2 years to get it all done. ;-p

I agree with:
- Samsung t5
- Samsung t7 (similar to t5 but faster)
- Sandisk extreme

A question about storage needs:
Are you going to keep the photos on the external drive, and NOT on the internal drive?
WHY I'm asking:
If you choose to keep them on an external drive, you need A SECOND EXTERNAL DRIVE which will serve as a backup for your "primary" external storage drive.

Same as you need a backup for the internal drive.

Prediction:
If you keep precious photos on ONLY ONE external drive, at some point in the future you're gonna lose them all... because the drive may fail, and there won't be a backup...

First question is: how are you viewing your photos?
If you use the built-in Photos app on the Mac, although there are workarounds, it is difficult to create a straight "backup" as your photos are integrated into the Photos app's library. It's easier to just enable iCloud Photos sync and let iCloud do the work. Or, just use Time Machine on an external drive, but then you'll be backing up the whole computer, not just your photos.

And yeah, for casual users, home users, etc, just use iCloud Photos. You can get up to 2TB for $9.99 a month. If you are already an established Mac + iOS user, it's easier this way.

That's my take. Backup is really a difficult thing to master for home users/novice. It's easier to rely on services like iCloud to do most of the work. Have the Photos app to be your organiser.

Next question is, how large is your photo library? If it's within 2TB or less, then the iCloud route imo is still the easiest.

This is the problem of doing manual backups to external drives for home/novice users. Not only you have to keep track of different type of backups ideally, you have to remember doing it. Sooner or later, the inconvenience will make one too lazy and the backup will lapse.

Was thinking I’d back up to one external drive, keep them on the iMac, the cloud, and the original memory sticks I’m gonna copy them over from.

The reason I’m moving them all onto the iMac is to pull my favorites and make photo books, which then stores those photos in Shutterfly also, as well as copies of the books I make, so I’d technically wind up with hard copies of the favorites as well.

I use Samsung T5 and T7 external SSDs for my backups for important data and also for my photos. I also use a couple of older HDD as archival drives for the images I've shot over the years. I shoot frequently, sometimes daily, and so have a lot of images even after going through and culling out the unwanted ones, so it is important to me to store them safely outside of the computer's internal 1 TB drive. I do everything manually, backing up and storing at least once a month, and I put one set of backups in my bank safe deposit box as well as having a set at home. I don't use iCloud for storing or backing up my images, I prefer having them on local drives where I know they're secure and easy for me to quickly access as needed.

Sounds like a good plan to me. I understand how big a job this is, but the iMac should make it efficient and enjoyable. I just received my new iMac as well and photo organizing will be a good project to tackle on it.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it sounds like you have your photos on thumb drives and nowhere else. If that is the case, you definitely need to get an external drive to backup these photos ASAP. You could probably get away with a 500gb model, but maybe a 1tb would be good for future storage.

I found a Sandisk on Costco.com for $100 (if you are a member), otherwise the Samsung T7 runs about double the speed of the Sandisk I mentioned, but is around $170. You will need a usb-a to usb-c adapter if you don’t already have one to connect the thumb drives to the iMac so you can transfer to the ssd.

If you want to keep the thumb drives, they could serve as a second backup, but they transfer at a fraction of the speed of an ssd, so they’re not very practical — and they may be more prone to failure. If you decide to ditch the thumb drives, just get two of the same ssd you choose so you have a redundant backup.

I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to ask any other questions, and maybe others will share their thoughts as well.

EDIT: From reading another post, I see you plan to keep the photos on the iMac and iCloud, plus have the hard backups. In this case, it isn’t necessary to have two ssd backups as I suggested. Also, you probably have either the 50gb or 200gb iCloud plan, and your iMac is 256gb, so a 1tb ssd might be overkill, but it depends on how many backups you want to store on it.

I'm a pretty typical home user and this is what I am doing for my photo back up situation with my new iMac. I also moved up from a 2011 iMac. With the new one I have 512GB internal storage, which is the same as my last iMac. That IMac was close to full after 10 years of use.

1. My photos library is on a Samsung T7.
2. I use iCloud photos to back up my photos from the photos app, but have it set to download originals to the library that is stored on the T7.
3. I have a 2TB LaCie HDD that is set up for Time Machine. That back up is set to include the T7.

All of this was pretty easy to set up. I am considering doing a CCC monthly that I keep at work in case of fires/theft just to be safe... but we'll see if I get to this.

I also should use the Summer to go through all my photos and purge. Thanks to my iPhone I have so many pictures that really aren't of anything worth keeping around.

I have just ordered a 1TB Samsung T5 - for backup, I can't see any justification for the extra cost of a T7.

My first Time Machine backup, to an old and slow 128GB SSD as the T5 has not yet arrived, was just over 50GB (not everything is on the Mac Mini yet), took about 8 minutes. And that was via USB-A.
