before I install either cydia or rock I wanted to ask here for some opinions. all I want off of the hack stores is a way to use skype over 3G and push fix. which of these two can provide me with what I need. and is it simple to setup the phone to call with skype over 3G with an app from one of these two app stores?

I prefer Cydia, as it uses apt to manage packages. Rock uses apt for community sources, but has its own proprietary installer for Rock apps and installs extensions which have caused problems for many. There is really nothing worthwhile that's in Rock but not Cydia.

Cydia is better if you ignore the recent problem where it couldn't handle bad input data from a source and rendered it unusable for many users. Oh, and if you ignore how long it takes to start and load it's database. Other than that, Cydia is the better app. :D

    Cydia.

Haven't found anything that I wanted on Rock thats not on Cydia. Stopped using Rock when I discovered (after purchasing a $14 app) that they install their own license to the app. When the developer put out a beta that I really wanted to try I wasn't able to, the developer wouldn't (couldn't) recognize the license. I had to re-purchase the app on Cydia and then was able to upgrade to the beta. I don't like buying things from a reseller that I can now only go back to that specific reseller for upgrades/etc.

    Better browsing

I think Rock has better browsing...you can sort by release date and rating, for example. Finding popular apps in Cydia is a challenge.

Lol other than all that aggregation here and there my vote goes to Cydia also.
And it saves your shsh"s files for you if you have a 3GS. I don't think Rock does that.

I'm not a fan of Rock App. While Cydia may be buggy at times (close unexpectedly) and takes some time to load up occasionally, it is the better app. Rock App seems laggy to me (on a 3GS) and I feel like there is too much going on in the app (too flashy haha).

I still have it, however, because of the backing up feature. I haven't used it yet, but I'm going to update to 3.1.2 eventually and want something that works for that.

I have both on my 3G iPhone. And I use both pretty much equally. I prefer Rock only because I've actually used their website to purchase apps than sync them to my phone. Thats an advantage I liked.
