Whats better to use... L2PT VPN or Logmein?

Just curious what most people will say is better to use in terms of Reliability and Security to a home server? Going with a direct connection thru VPN or using Logmein.

Just looking to connect my iPad2/iPhone with my server to grab files and media.

Or is there a better way I am not thinking of?

I would think it depends on your particular skill level at setting up a VPN of your own.

For someone who has a low skill level, I would suggest LogMeIn, though I haven't used their iPhone stuff, so not sure how it works for VPN.
