Ok its been something i've been struggling with for a while in the terms of whats better lets say in an ideal world you go for the top specs MBP retina with 16gb of ram and an ssd.... is it better in terms of processing (after effects maya etc.) than an iMac with an SSD 1gb of ram and top specs processor???

1GB of RAM is pretty much unusable in today's world.

1 GB of ram? Boy, that just sounds so 1980 now.
    More ram ...

I think that the OP had a typo with the 1 GB RAM.

The iMac has certainly more processing power. If you want mobility and high resolution, then go with the new retina MacBook Pro; otherwise, the iMac is the choice.

For daily use at home or in the office, I highly recommend the iMac. This is based on my observation with the use of my MacBook Air. For a prolonged period of use of the Air, I always had eye strain even though I enlarged the fonts.
