I never really got NC with my AirPods Pro 2. They would stay in my ears (even while running, unless I smiled at someone), but I could never get them lined up properly during the test. I am curious about the redesign and two extra tips and whether that would solve this problem for me.

Side note, is there a way to check battery life on my current AirPods?

A larger case for a smaller battery, to hold smaller earbuds. I’m curious how that works out.
My guess is it's future-proofing. We had a rumor recently that the time from this upgrade to the next could be measured in months rather than years. If so, the extra space may be for an as-yet-unknown upgrade next year that would not impact the form factor so soon after the release of the APP3.

eta: i guess the 3’s do specify w ANC enabled. the 2’s do not.
I think this is the difference:

AirPods Pro 2 battery is measured WITHOUT ANC enabled.
AirPods Pro 3 battery is measured WITH ANC enabled.

In other words:

APP2 has 6hrs of charge.
APP3 has 8hrs of charge WITH ANC. This means it should last even longer than that w/o ANC.

The case listening time is provided similarly:

APP2 case provides 30hrs of listening time.
APP3 case provides 24hrs of listening time WITH ANC. This means it should last longer w/o ANC, likely meeting or exceeding the APP2 case.

My money is the new case has a larger battery but we'd need a teardown to confirm.

with all the effort and engineering in the tips and heart rate monitor, they didn't bother with the hardware improvement, same chip with optimization. So the 2x ANC was only due to the new silicone tip... somehow APP4 is imminent next year but i still buy APP3.

Eartips contribute to passive noise cancellation (PNC). ANC uses microphones. This means Apple would need to be lying about the 2x increase in ANC.

On the comparison site, the difference for ANC is related to the use of lower-frequency microphones.

Surely I'm not the only one who saw black Airpods during the event. Where are those?
During the iPod-style dancing-silhouettes sequence (0:03:56) there’s a few lighting fades that make the white reflective plastic turn dark momentary, especially the closing shot of the charging case.

Yep, that was it. Shame, they looked good.

Thank you - great analysis. Yours is the most likely explanation (at least until we get more info / teardown).

It doesn’t seem to have a smaller battery, probably the same size or a little larger. Apple is just stating 24 Hours of listening time with ANC on. They don’t measure the 2s that way. I would bet with the 3s you’d get way more than 30 Hours with ANC turned off. 🤔

Yeah it’s about 10 hours with Transparency, so translating the case battery life:

24 hours for NC.
then…
30 hours for Transparency
= the same as APP2

Correct?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's why I'm waiting for reviews. I imagine I'll buy them but I'd be interested to know if the battery is bigger, why wouldn't they advertise it?

All I want to know is whether the AirPods will charge more reliably when plopped into the case. Had the issue with the OG AirPods Pro and also with Pro 2

The video said that the new ear tips are "foam infused". I wonder how that differs from the AP Pro 2. I can't pass the ear seal test with any of the standard Pro 2 tips, so I bought foam tips from Foam Master, and they work well. It would be good if I didn't have to buy those.

Also, why aren’t they advertising the APP2 “Transparency” battery life??

I own the Pros 2 and the ANC is essantial for being able to work at the office. I have a colleague behind me who makes internal burp noises after lunch and he also yawns starting from 3pm most of the time. These noises drive me nuts. Then there's the occasional person eating a biscuit which I hate as well. So while the ANC is great on the Pros 2, I'll be trying the 3 out at the Apple Store with the mix of earwax of the entire city inside them, and wait for good deals at the end of the year or next year.

Imagine those eating habits..
