Apple can't stick with the iPhone forever. What do you think will be Apple's next revolutionary mobile device? Post your thoughts! How do you think Apple will extend the iPhone?

Why can't they? The iPod hasn't been given the heave-ho, has it?

I think more iPhone models will emerge, each better (or at least with a nifty new feature) than the last. That's what is happening with the iPod line, and I think is what will happen with the iPhones.

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A400 Safari/528.16)

Life - death - and what ever comes next!

Seriously? A slimmer divice with better hardware and software...

Hmm. They can! They can improve on it every year.

For example: Palm Treo -- but its too bad that Palm is going under though. If they had the funds, I'm sure the Treo's would have been better. Apple is better financially stable than Palm.

I'd be curious what the next-generation UI will be like. First, the iPod's "circular" menu control. Then, the "multi-touch" interface used in the iPhone / iPod touch. What's next?

Telekinesis. I would say voice command but, we have that, and you can't have everyone talking to their devices all the time.

Well, I'm not sure it'll be out soon, but there was a commercial awhile back with a guy that looked like he was talking to himself and scaring a bunch of birds. What he was doing was looking at (I'm not sure if it was holographic) screen in front of him and doing what we'd normally be doing with a monitor and keyboard.

You probably mean telepathy? Telekinesis will move physical objects. :)

We do have voice command, but it still leaves a lot to be desired. Improvement on voice command should defintely be on the table.

Physical buttons. For sure. At least fifty of them.

Jobs will get on stage and demonstrate how he's able to do things without a) looking at the screen or b) covering it with greasy fingers.

The fanboys will swoon over it, especially after Jobs says "and boy did we patent it", along with "and we have MORE buttons than anyone else!"

The downside will be that a few of the current fanboys will die when their heads spin around while trying to claim both touch and buttons are equal in the eyes of Apple.

The next year after that, we'll get a stylus again. And more fanboys will blow up, sadly. Ah well, such is progress.

If the recent rumors are to be believed, we will likely see a tablet or two (possibly 6" and a 10").

I've also heard rumblings of Apple entering the TV market. Possibly a TV integrated with the Apple TV and DVR functionality and the ability to use your iPhone or iPod Touch as a remote.

Another faint rumor is that within the next two or so years both iWork and iLife will have cloud-based versions giving you the power of these applications through your iPhone and iPod Touch.

And i personally believe Apple will partner with a major audio provider and auto manufacturer and deliver a touch-based interface for autos based on Apple's innovations in multi-touch gestures.

My prediction for Apple and what is next is that they are slowly and steadily transforming into a consumer electronics company that has hooks into many markets and not just a personal computer and software company. Look for Apple's multi-touch to be the interface on refrigerators, home security/monitoring systems, home entertainment systems, etc.

iShower - A large white box that you step into to get clean. The temperature has been pre-set at the factory so you don't have to worry about it ("end users don't know what temperature they want"). It really doesn't work any better than other showers, but you will smell much better than your friends after using it.

iDog - A dog that does everything you ask it to do and looks cooler than your friends dogs, but it's vet bills are twice as much.

iCasket - A large white box that you place your remains in when you pass away. Because of its attractive design, you won't want to put this under the ground. Comes with 802.11N. It doesn't do MMS either.

Will the iDog fetch? that is a common thing for most dogs but like MMS I bet Steve Jobs will say its Over Rated.

Can I facebook or twitter from the iCasket?
I'm looking forward to the iUrn since i dreamed i died in a firey explosion when my iPhone exploded fueling up my iPinto cause the iCar was in the shop cause I bricked it trying to unlock it.

A car better than the Maybach made by Apple? That'd cost more than a country!

On-topic: the iPhone will stay, it'll obviously have different things at the end of it's name (iPhone 4GSJ or whatever) with better features and the line may be expanded to include a "iPhone nano" or something, but the iPhone is here to stay as is the iPod.

Stero speakers (i.e. 2) and louder ringtones will do me. A bit slimmer would be nice as well.

reminds me of when my son was little and learning the months in a year.
he was perplexed and asked, "what happens after December? Where do we go after that?"

    I said, "we start over"

so there's your answer. "we start over"
