There are numerous posts from people disappointed with Apple and the lack of innovation and features in new iPhones.

I’ll admit that while I’m a big fan of technology, I don’t have a list of things that I feel like are missing from the iPhone.

Many say they want the obvious upgrades:
  • USB-C
  • No more pill/notch
  • Better battery
  • Less weight
  • Reverse charging
  • Different sizes
To me those are technical challenges but wouldn’t be innovative in terms of features.

So I’m asking…

What innovative features do you want?
What would Steve Jobs be putting into the iPhone that isn’t there already?
What features would make you say that the next iPhone release isn’t boring?
What features would make you say that Apple is innovating again?

List them all!

USB-C would be nice but it is not a deal breaker.
I don’t even see to pill of notch after a while. Even the island does nothing for me. Not bothered about it.
Batteries will not get better until there is an advance in technology.
Weight will decrease as phone get larger with larger screen and batteries.
Reverse charging would be very inefficient, I would never use it.
Size? Give me the new Ultra!

What do I want? I want to be able to program my phone to only charge to like 80%! I only use 20-30% on the average day and do not need my phone charged to 100%! I would think this would extend battery life!

Acting as AR anchor for the glasses, working in tandem to provide a larger visual interface.

Lossless audio with AirPods, maybe with H2 or H3 chip.

More computational photography on all cameras, to get even closer or surpass DSLR and Mirrorless cameras. Simulated bokeh blur still has a long way to go compared to the full frame cameras.

Lighter weight / new materials.

Better battery life, imagine an iPhone that’s more powerful but with 7 day battery.

For me, it's all about photography. The camera is the only real reason to have an expensive phone rather than a cheap, generic one from 2015.

Not only do I love taking photos for pleasure, I also take photos and especially video for practical purposes at work all day long, often in poor light. Even incremental improvements matter a lot to me, and I think there's a great deal left on the table with things like bigger sensors, periscope lens and more sophisticated computation.

My other main wants relate to software. I'd love iOS/the ecosystem in general to be much contextually aware of what I'm doing and what I might need. I can laboriously set up things like Focus modes to switch on at certain times and locations...but I feel like this is something ML could be doing much better. I'm sitting down in a meeting or a lecture? Have a correctly titled Apple note ready to go, with links to previous meetings on the same topic. It feels like we're inching forward to this kind of stuff, but there's a long way to go.

I think, it should be Apple invent how to wow their iPhone customers base. It’s like when Apple introduce MacBook Air, or iPad or even iPhone in the first place. It may not be a true invention (some companies have made it before), but combination of hardware/ software / marketplace that made it breakthrough innovation.

I think that’s a fair point. There are some features that many would like to see that are obvious, like USB-C. But sometimes it’s hard to know what is possible for Apple. I would not have thought it was possible to put the satellite connectivity into a normal iPhone for example.

I am gonna get alot of hate for this but I really want a foldable iphone , something to compete with the galaxy Z Fold
Agreed. Even an iPhone that simply folded in half would make an iPhone Pro Max size or bigger much more feasible to those who don't like huge phones. It's a ways off though--if it ever comes.

We need an extra button on the iPhone too. Customizable, to enable things that are hard to do one handed for example. Now that the phones are getting larger, more buttons near the bottom would be nice.
