Surprised no one mentioned this yet - the 7 needs to have an OLED display.. this is long overdue and the dull blacks drive me nuts. Thinner upper and lower bezels, preferable a 4k display.
To elaborate on this point, I believe that Apple will implement a MicroLED display in the iphone7 or 7S. With the purchase of LuxVue on May 2, 2014, it gives them plenty of time to test the technology. If nobody know what LuxVue produces they are power-efficient, super bright displays (up to 9 times brighter than current AMOLED and LCD displays) that experts are saying is the next big leap in display technology (http://bit.ly/1HZRYgl)

That's my best guess on what significant change will come to the iphone 7. I believe we might transition to smaller bezels at the top and sides of the phone. I would love to see a waterproof design and fast charging but that might be asking for too much.

This tech, smaller bezels, no home button, fast charging and waterproof? that would be amazing.

Thanks for the heads up - I didn't realize Apple had this ace up their sleeve. This is awesome something to look forward to.

I don't think the 7 will have OLED. They just released 3D Touch and its heavily integrated with the backlight to measure the microscopic changes in distance. Some interviews Apple have stated they worked on 3D Touch for 4-5 years to get it to the level we see today in the 6s. I highly doubt they will ditch technology they spent years on after only one year. I would imagine it would take a few more years to tweak it to work without a backlight (OLED).

I suspect the 7 will still be LCD and get bumped to 1080p and the Plus to maybe 1440p? (Or is its native res in the 1200's?)

On screen Touch ID is also very unlikely. They just released gen 2 Touch ID, so I think the home button is here to stay for a couple more years at least as well.

As for bezels. Well, they serve an actual purpose. They give you room to hold the phone (especially when watching videos and playing games.) Sure, I'd like to see maybe a bit smaller, but bezel-less just isn't practical in real use. It only "looks nice".

It's time to get a away from LCD. It's 2015, so many better options exist now.

I saw something about that too (here on MR actually). I hope that Apple doesn't abandon metals altogether. Perhaps they will finally do something big with that Liquid Metal company that they acquired? One can dream.
Does Liquidmetal still make the SIM tools you find in international and SIM-free iPhones? The SIM-free 6Plus I bought last year had a SIM tool that I've been using.

I don't see the home button going anywhere until/unless they reach the point where you can unlock it from nearly any portion of the screen. While the button uses up valuable real estate, it still performs a core function of the device, and right now, having a physical button to center your finger on makes unlocking the phone a breeze. Trying to consistently locate on-screen buttons is nowhere near as reliable.

Part of the issue regarding what else could apple do, is that maturing of iPhone product. There's less they can do, other then improve the camera, display and what not.

We'll see some new designs with how it looks, better cameras as mentioned but overall the pace of change has slowed quite a bit.

Yup, this is what I'm thinking too. Is it bad that I already want the 7? My 6s Plus should hold me over in the meantime though.

^this

Not that is pertains to the physical design of the phone per se ... but there's Moore's Law.

If you trim down the fat bezels, it will be perfectly fine to use a 5.5" phone with one hand.

I hope for minimalized bezels and the home button built into 3D Touch.

It can only get so fast, cameras can only get so good, etc. That's why Apple will need to continue innovating with new features.

Add another vote for less bezels. Been saying it since the first phone. Its at least gotten better, but still makes their phones look like kid toys

This is the first that I'm hearing of this. What?! Super excited to see if this technology makes it into the iPhone 7. That said, the current displays in the iPhone 6/6S are no slouches, either.

To my knowledge, it is still Liquidmetal SIM removal tools. Color me ignorant, but--I didn't realize iPhones shipped with the removal tool. Or maybe they don't in my case: iPhone 5 on Verizon. I just settle for ye olde paper clip. :p

I used to think the home button was out on the 7, but now that they redid the entire Touch ID system, allow a double press to pull up the Wallet, and you double press to multitask makes me realize we're going to have a physical button for a while. This is honestly fine because I can't imagine how poor the Apple Watch would be without the physical buttons on the side.

Sometimes, touchscreens aren't the answer as it turns out.

Some bezels might be reduced and I bet we get a 1080p screen on the 7 and a 1440p one on the 7 Plus — all on 16 GB base storage.

OPTICAL ZOOM on the camera would be great. We're already accustomed to a protruding camera.

I'd like the top bezel made smaller — just big enough to keep the camera and phone speaker. The bottom can stay as is. I'd love those rubber antennae lines removed from the back somehow. Or just less noticeable. Conductive "wireless" charging could be cool.

Maybe I'm crazy but the Samsung Edge does look nice. I'd be interested in Apple doing something similar with the screen spilling over the sides. Not for any practical reason. Just because it's beautiful. Massive kudos to Samsung for that one.

Apple did not acquire Liquidmetal. Apple purchased the exclusive rights to use the alloy for a number of years.

+1 on the OLED.
4K is complete overkill in a phone.
2k maybe?

You can force touch from the left of the display to multitask.

They just need to figure out how to incorporate the current TouchID sensor into the display.

Assuming the next two are the 7 and the 7s, I wouldn't expect on screen Touch ID until at least the 8.

I like the size of the phones now. I would like to see a better battery. Whats so wrong with a larger battery? Apple may not think it necessary but if there is room for it then put it in. It's not like it would be wasted and no one would ever use it.
Waterproofing? I haven't dropped mine in water so I have no idea how good it is but again... it couldn't hurt.

I can't really think of anything else. I like the phones. I have an iPhone 6. I probably won't upgrade until the 7. I'm not bashing the 6s I just usually upgrade every two years.
