The talk of teacher certification reminds me of my mother, who returned to teaching in the late 1980s after many years away. I don't recall her diatribes, but I recall her being irritated at how it seemed like things had changed towards more education courses, and away from studying the field one would teach in. I'm not sure how much of this was state certification and how much was the local college's view. She was particularly annoyed with this issue with foreign language study, where someone could be certified to teach, but not really have an ideal level of mastery with the language.

It might be possible, I think it probably depends on the state. Minnesota, for instance, ONLY offers a portfolio as an alternative pathway. I think other states might have some sort of post-graduate thing, though.

I don't know anything about this sort of thing. I came into contact when my mother started teaching in the late 80s, but that was a long time ago. Things change...

That said, one thought I have. It might--and notice the might--be possible that the problem is the initial certification. In other words, one might be able to find a state where certification is easy, teach there a while, and be able to use that to get certification elsewhere. Something to look at, since it might open options--even if it results in being stuck somewhere you don't want to live for a few years.
That's true about private schools, and certainly something to look further into.
Yes. Another plus: the conditions could possibly be a lot better in private schools.

Another possible road: aiming for the college level, although this would require a lot more school. (And, unfortunately, it might be harder getting positions. I don't know about music, but I know other field can be brutally competitive these days.)

Reading the posts above reminds me of a funny (well not that funny!) AI story.

At work we have an annual appraisal. No one likes doing them. Especially if you have been there a while.

Any way management try to rehash the question every few years to mix it up.

Of course the last few times management has used ChatGPT to rewrite the questions.

Of course the staff then use AI to answer them! So instead of management finding out what the staff feel about the company and their staffs thoughts about their role, we get AI asking what a different AI thinks about work!

Rather pointless exercise if you ask me!

Well, if you can distract all the AIs by getting them to talk to each other, maybe you can then get on with some real work.

And maybe, if GrokAI falls in love with ChatGPT, they might get married have have lots of baby AIs.

Of course, one of the many problems with AI is that the data centres are getting to the point where they will be using up more energy than people.

I already complained about it once, but it bears reiterating. Whoever decided to make .webp into a "thing" should be fired.

Out of a cannon.

Into a solid brick wall.

At least four times.

Dreams I had in the night. All very different but very vivid.

One involved two friends I had as a teenager. They were brother and sister. Both have passed away now. No idea why they were on my mind.

The other dream was just as weird but not something I want to get into here.

This is something I considered. Currently, I don’t really want to go to grad school. Unless that’s something I purposefully aim for, at this point it doesn’t make a lot of sense. I’ve been told to wait a few years after undergrad before deciding about grad school—I think four people have made that recommendation and I think it makes sense. Also, I’m lucky to have zero student debt for undergrad, and I don’t want that to change—there are fewer scholarships, etc. for grad programs as far as I know.

Not just lucky--but VERY lucky!

I don’t want that to change

I don't blame you.

That's my impression, although I'm going by hearsay. But I do remember my father towards the end of his life saying something about how much better things once were for graduate students. Some things that helped him no longer even exist, period.

Has anyone else been getting a lot of spam texts recently?

I have been noticing a decrease in spam calls, and T-Mobile's built-in filter tends to catch those, but the spam texts are out of control. I've had three just this morning and I've only been up for two hours.

I "Delete and Report Junk" but I'm not confident those reports are going anywhere meaningful since this problem only seems to be getting worse for me.

They seem to come in waves...as tho your number is on some new list that's making the rounds of spammers.

I rarely ever get spam calls or texts. It’s mostly emails for some reason. And yeah, “Delete and Report Junk” doesn’t really do much.

I hardly ever get a spam call or text.

I have come to the point of thinking "spam" in "spam political text" is repetitive...

I'm a bit bitter on the topic, because I have a plan that charges per text. I do not want texts reminding me to vote (not that my vote really counts--elections are so much of a foregone conclusion with many races where I am). And I'm not interested in supporting most candidates in any way, past possibly voting for them as the lesser of evils. It's interesting I have NEVER gotten any text from a candidate I truly supported.

I think my mistake was once signing petitions, which put info about me inot a database that has probably been sold and resold countless times since. I no longer sign petitions, having learned the error of my ways. (Plus in an advanced level of cynicism, I've come to believe that petitions carry no real weight. The only things the politicians care about is a real risk of losing an election and losing the support of the big money interests they represent.)

The other one that got me was a place where I had regular appointments had a real problem with sending text reminders, which--again--I did not need or want. It took several rounds to get those texts stopped.

Agree text reminders are annoying. You make appointment and you put it in the calendar. Who needs a separate appointment reminder via text?

i’ve started getting spam texts as group chats occasionally. super random but my daughter gets them too.

I get those spam group chats as well, though recently the spam texts have been the most generic, one of two varieties:

1. Fake job offers.
2. Random texts that say things like "Hey, we haven't talked in a while".

The latter kind are the newest type, and very strange to me. It's obviously spam because although I don't have the numbers of everyone I know memorized, no one I know would ever text me out of the blue without mentioning my name. It doesn't say "Hey, Eden", I delete it and ignore it.

I'm not sure why this specific type of text has been more common for me lately, but it's certainly annoying. But it's true my phone number out there a lot over the years. Starting to regret that now...
