Talk about a warped family. That is just stupid what they did. Father and son gunmen killed 15 at Australia’s Bondi Beach with many more injured.

Thank god for the by stander. Yes very risky but well worth it.

On my mind right now: I recently built an app in my free time that we actually use at work to manage retrospective meetings. It's come along so well that I'm thinking of releasing it to the public as a SaaS product with a free tier. I need to do some research before I start adding features, but I think it's a good idea.

Disorganized people (and how much I hate their disorganization, and how easy it is, in my mind, to be organized) is on my mind.

Horrible damp grey day out there.
Oh, yes.

It was already (further) darkening by 14.00.......
Perfectly matches my mood today as it wasn’t a great nights sleep.
Agreed.

Now, yesterday, on the other hand, was most pleasant; I met an academic friend for a Yuletide glass of wine (or two - she teaches 19th century English at the university, and was cheerfully celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen) in a lovely, small, welcoming winebar (down a medieval laneway - as our favourite 16th-17th century pub, unfortunately, was already absolutely jammed, heaving with the thirsty hordes).

Sounds lovely. Although I don’t tend to go out in December at all if I can avoid it.

Only a few days left until Sun Stoppage Day.

My view toward the western horizon is blocked, but eastward is pretty good. There's a cluster of trees about 1/4 mile away that I use to gauge where the first ray of sunrise occurs. Today's clouds blocked it, so maybe in the next few days.

It was.

Neither do I, but - most unusually and rather unexpectedly - this has now happened twice this particular December with academic friends, once this week - yesterday - and once on the Wednesday of last week; and both occasions were actually exceedingly pleasant and quite lovely evenings.

At some point one of these days, I should get to work on my annual holiday mailing, which I usually send out in the new year. I have plans to include something that I might do on a computer. But the horrifying problem: the easiest way forward is to use a Windows system I have access to.

We pause now to let everyone here shudder at this thought.

I think of ways to use something, anything else. But that would add hassle and possible pitfalls.

If you give us more details, perhaps someone could come up with a more Mac-centric solution.

The alternative is to put on your best PPE, wear your most powerful talisman, mutter your most powerful protective incantations, hold your breath and dive in...

Dark, dreary and dismal weather today - in fact, it was already getting dark around 15.00.

However, thankfully, only a mere three-four days remain until we arrive at the day of the winter solstice...........
Agreed. Rained all day. Not that I saw much of it. It was a very busy day as I am off work tomorrow and Monday. Lots of things that ‘had’ to be done before I finished.

Now why can’t all weekends be four day weekends?

Back home it’s been in the mid-60s. In Chicago right now and the weather is pretty bad. Dark and rainy. Probably not as dark and rainy as Wisconsin though. I go back up there at New Year’s.

Kind of a rough day, honestly. It’s cold and dark outside, the food court was absolutely rammed for lunch and there was nowhere to sit, I felt out of place in the last two clinics, and it’s just a little overwhelming. Yesterday was great, and hopefully tomorrow will be equally good.

I often find that at about the halfway point of something, whether that’s a trip, conference, or some other event, it just gets really rough. Then it gets better though usually, so I’m hopeful that will be the case tomorrow.

Not going to the Office Christmas Party this year. People keep asking me why I'm not going. Would have to get 2 trains there and 2 back. Err, no thanks.

Ours was last week. I’ve not been in a decade. I think less people go each year. I think most people would just prefer a gift card (which is what they did during Covid).

Friend: "Hey, chown, I broke some of the gingerbread men I was decorating. Do you want them?"
Me: "Sure, they taste the same."

At least not like the dark December days plus temperatures in the -40s like it happens in the interior of Alaska :)
That's true, at least about the Norther Lights. But bears can be quite difficult to approach. Now, moose (Alces, or Elk), caribou, foxes, and so on, are commonly seen nearby. Black bears are often present in the streets and neighborhoods of Anchorage, but not in Fairbanks where I live. :)

Oh, how I wish to be running right now. 32 days post surgery, and provisionally (until doctors say otherwise) 90 days (12 weeks) is when my sternum is healed enough to recommence running. Walking is great, and up to 5.5kms (1 hr ish) in a day, but despite the podcasts, and audiobooks, it's boring.
It's getting real close to Christmas, and with, what's left of my family in the UK, so far away, and being of that age, in a newish country, my 'friends' are colleagues, who are off to spend time with family, whilst I navigate these '58' days, alone and bored.
Fairytale of New York came up on YouTube today, the Jimmy Fallon/Saoirse Ronan version, and the tears appeared. Good news though, although I don't consider myself a non-drinker, but rather someone who chooses not to drink, today, I've chosen to buy a 6 pack of Guinness and reflect on my roots.
Merry Xmas y'all. 🎄

I live in the UK and our wildlife is so dull compared to yours. Foxes, a few deer, no bears or Elk.
