It’s hot. My mind has mostly been on that today! Fans not helping all that much. Hoping the weather breaks soon. This is quite unbearable in a country mostly without AC.
That’s true—it’s like an oven!

There was a report on the news today that two people drowned in the Rhine—or wherever it was. That’s why it’s better to go to a swimming pool or a public pool.

35 degrees Celsius or 95 Fahrenheit

It's 95F here too. It's a "dry heat" (Thank God) but the morning and evenings are usually chokingly humid.

I’m just melting today. Other than my early morning hour and a half on the cross trainer, I’ve done nothing all day.
Moving more than a few inches from the fan and it’s unbearable.

I'm not looking forward to the office tomorrow. They sent out the usual "we want to help in anyway we can to make people comfortable as possible" email. Yeah? So let us work from home then!

Be careful in open water, particularly with cold water shock... We've lost a few here and heard reports of 40 or so in France during the past week...

Went to a lake today for a bit of quick diving practice, really quite shallow (13m max) and was 36 degrees. As everything was hotter than hell decided not wear any insulation under my drysuit as I thought I was going to pass out just gearing up and walking to the water. Anyway jumped in and the first foot or so was like a genuinely hot bath - dropped through that into a layer of warmish water (lovely - just the ticket) then at around 4m you dropped below that into water that was, well, bloody cold, brrr... Despite being used to all this I was really surprised at just how cold it was and how defined the thermoclines were.

Yeah, thanks.

Here in Germany, this is a constant topic in the news. SWR reported that three men were recovered dead from the Rhine, and Bayerischer Rundfunk reported that a person drowned in the Danube.

There were apparently also accidents on the Dortmund-Ems Canal in Münster, Westphalia.

That’s why you should listen to the lifeguard (Bademeister) and the DLRG.

I have to admit that I'm concerned by pestitcides in produce... My ideal would be to go organic, but that doesn't work well for my current budget realities much of the time. 😭

Maybe it's playing Russian Produce Roulette, but I A) buy into the argument one is better off eating fruit than not, even if flawed, [...]
The science appears to back you up. The health benefits of fruits and vegetables far outweigh the downside of pesticides. See:

The Pet Shop Boys.

To me, Neil Tennant looks like a real gentleman. Plus, I find he has a very pleasant voice.

The last time I saw them was on TV two years ago, when they were giving an interview about their new album. They revealed that they have a soft spot for German *Schlager* music and for Berlin. Wow! I was completely floored! I hadn't known that at all until then. And my first British band!

And that ties in with my own little conspiracy theory (don't take it seriously! It's an inside joke!):

I think the two of them are following me! Because every time I turn on the radio—who is it that seems to get played after half an hour? Exactly! The Pet Shop Boys!

I agree, here in the city I live (Heemstede, The Netherlands), it was 35 degrees Celsius today. Crazy...

Fortunately, it's "dry heat" here too, so it's still bearable if you really take your time and take it easy.
My boss told me and my colleagues: "If you feel better working from home, you have permission to do so." We rely on schools, and some of them are closing at 12:00 or 12:30PM.
Our meteorological Institute has issued an orange weather code (extreme heat warning).
Tomorrow (Thursday), it'll be like 31 degrees, but I'm certainly not looking forward to Friday, where it'll be close to 40...
Lowest temperature are around 22 or 23 degrees.
I really hope the heat breaks soon after that.

I am so glad I traded my car last september for a newer car with AC. My previous car didn't had AC.
Those who are dealing with the heat, stay safe and be careful.

No AC in a car is no fun. I was driving home from a trip yesterday for over four hours. Made it a lot more pleasant.

Heck I’m considering sleeping in the car at this point!

What is the reason the UK is mostly not with AC? Is this in the remote areas?
My SO visited London and Scotland a few years ago, and she said she recalls AC being prevalent.

Because most houses are not constructed with it. Up until a few years back it really wasn’t required all that much. But with global warming it’s changed a lot.

Also we pay a lot more for electricity than they do in the states. So it’s not really an option for many people.

I just bought a Keychron K2 HE and it's fantastic except a slight keyboard wobble. 99% of people wouldn't even notice it due to how small and insignificant it is, but my OCD is going crazy.

I think I also read in one of your posts that the windows open out - which would make it herder to install windows units. Is that correct?

The would bother me too... with that said, I have been using a keychain for many years. They are great keyboards. Are you going to exchange it?

Here in Switzerland, our windows open inwards but most types of aircon are banned. In Basel, where I am currently, almost all types are banned. It's a huge debate and happens every year now.

Luckily, compared to most of the UK (I only know London as that's where I go regularly) our heatwave here might be lasting longer but there's less humidity, so it's bearable.

Plus, a couple of our museums have just advertised that they have full climate control and are having free entry while the heatwave continues.

I know at least one person who has a decent aircon system anyway and just hides it. No one is going to complain, and I even dare the local government to moan about it, due to the ****storm it'd create 😁

This is the most talked about one. Outside of this heatwave it's usually Fr.800! (Fr.1 ~ $1)

Thanks for the information.

I would rally behind the guy that has the AC system too! High heat can be dangerous (just like very cold temperatures) especially fo the elderly and people with health problems. This concerns me, not just here in the US, but anywhere there are unhealthy temperatures.

Here there have been stories in the news of people sat in a stationary car with the AC on which is illegal in the UK.

I have an electric car so I don’t have that issue. But sleeping in the car isn’t ideal at my age!

Re: air conditioning in cars.

I remember a high school teacher talking about a family trip through the south before AC was common in cars. It was horrible. Years later, he called the states they visited "Lousyanna" and "Misery."

Most of my cars had 4/55 Air Conditioning. 4 windows open, 55 miles per hour. Many of these never had AC, one had AC that never worked when I had the car (bought used).

Only one car had working AC, although it only worked for a while. The previous owner was married to a mechanic. The mechanic told me that the AC was broken for a period, and he felt it was probably best left alone, due to costs. But one day an AC tech was around, and said "I'll take a quick look." I turned out to be a cheap, easy fix. The owner later screamed that she could have had AC for the last year. and her husband had some crack about I saw what was broken and I can go break it again!

Haha, yeah, me too! Just had the best part of my day driving home with the AC on. Bliss!

I have an AC unit in my bedroom but it's just too noisy to sleep when it's on. Make the room like a fridge but in this weather it soon heats up again.
