You can't really "reduce" the gloss- it's either glossy or not glossy.

Of course, it can be reduced. How much it would cost to be reduced is another matter. It's just a matter of formulating the correct surface and applying it to the display.

1280 is a very nice width, and necessary these days. Makes your chat window fit next to your browser :D

That depends on the browser width. Fo example I can only (on my 1440x900 iMac) fit an iChat chat window beside a single Safari window only when I resize the chat window to its minimum width. ...I need a 20 inch screen :D

HOLY S***! I never noticed the dictionary on my Macbook! WOW! That'll come in handy. All my previous Mac experiences have been on Panther and earlier. WOW!

Thanks! Now I have *another* thing to show off to my friends.

Prepare to be amazed again. In Safari (or any other modern app in Tiger) just move the cursor over a word and press ctrl-command-d then wait a second or two, depending on the computer.

That's what I said - a 1920x1200 13.3" screen. As the OS moves to res. independent operation screens will gain density rapidly to keep up. It's only a matter of time.

And how much battery life do you expect with that resolution?

:D

I love it. I use it all the time.

So now everyone has learned both the definition of 'whinge' and how to use the dictionary function. What an informative thread!

Errr..but back on topic. I spent some quality time with a MacBook for the first time only last week. I thought the screen was great. No issues there. Funnily enough, the thing that irritated me (literally) was the sharpness of the edge of the notebook, which started to chafe at my wrists and hands. Compared to more rounded-off edges of my 12" PowerBook, it was like a knife.

Or maybe it's my imagination and my PowerBook only feels nice and smooth from a few years of heavy use.

I just sold my new 15" MBP (with glossy screen!) to get a new black macbook.

I needed something a little more portable and robust so the MB is a great combination and the screen size isn't bothering me at all.

I'll be ditching my windows PC soon and getting a Mac Pro hopefully as I spend all my time using the Macbook anyway.

As for gloss, I've said this before but you get more glare from a matt screen. Or at least it bothers me more anyway.

Matt screens diffuse the glare across a bigger area. The glossy screen just gives you more a sharp reflection though. It just depends which kind of glare bothers you most. I could barely use my old Powerbook in the office for the glare off the lighting but the glossy screens I'm finding much better.

Just personal opinion.

Nice use of the built-in dictionary... :p

I'm content with my 12" display, though when at home it's hooked up to a generously bigger 20" monitor.

My issue with the MBP is the terrible keyboard. but that's for another day.

I think that the quality of the Macbook's screen is great, but one of the reasons people want a 12" MB/MBP is that the Macbook is that the old 12" iBooks and PBs were still noticeably more portable in some ways. Example: when I'm in school, with my iBook on my desk, the most important dimension is width. The Macbook is a little over 1.5" (that's 4 cm for anyone who didn't have to look up whinger, which BTW Safari underlines for me as a misspelled word :)) wider than the iBook, which ends up quite noticeable when you're fighting for crowded table space side-by-side with other students.

There is a dictionary in Panther to.

If they would put more contrast into the not so glossy displays or reduce the gloss so that it didn't reflect, I'd be happier. The size of the machine is great, though.

The screen is v. annoying, I will get a anti glare cover when I get mine...

I'll put my input on this ...

I personally love the screen on the macbook. The resolution is nice, I wasn't sure moving down from a 17" powerbook how'd I feel about it. But I haven't had many issues with it, I was even able to use Pages laying out a newsletter without much of an issue, same with iMovie and Photoshop with all the palettes.

I wanted a really portable laptop for me to bring to class and take notes, and to use at home with an external LCD. I wouldn't mind if the screen was only 11" as it would be just wide enough for me to take notes and browse the web. Virtual desktops, expose, and slapbook I could use while I'm on the road, and it'll still work great.

As for the gloss of the screen, I was worried. Honestly, it's been a very nice screen, and I haven't had ANY issues with the screen over the past six weeks I've had the blackbook. I do miss the backlit keyboard, but that's about it. The gloss just isn't that bad ... I wasn't able to see the screen well outdoors with a matte screen anyway. Just have to orient yourself the right way.

So can it be smaller? In my opinion, yes, and I would be willing to trade up if they released a smaller version of the laptop.

Is the gloss a factor? It all depends on your opinion. I'm a believer now.
