Using the Kingston bought from Newegg. I use it, roommate uses it, at least 10 other friends too. For me it's been tested and proven.

ordered one..

I just ordered the newegg GSkill 2x2GB Lat.4 RAM.. I hope it turns out ok. :)

I wonder if it'll do any significant change on my MacBook Pro 2.4 Penryn..

installed 4GB of gskill RAM from newegg. runs great.

sold the old 2GB on craigslist for $30.

i think the upgrade cost me 50 bucks after selling the 2GB.

I always use OWC, for RAM or external FW drives. My only beef with the $95 4gb MB 2.4 upgrade is that each module has 16 total memory chips, vs. 8 on the Apple... and the chips are of a make I've never heard of rather than the Micron parts in the photograph.

I know from the micron website that 2GB modules with 8 chips do exist, but don't know what they cost, and if the photos are going to be inaccurate then no way to tell which you'll get.

Then again, the diff should only be a few min of battery life. It's just not what I was expecting (tho for $95, I should have been).

It's fun running "top" in terminal and seeing zero pageins from the virtual memory.

I recommend either Crucial or OWC. Go with which ever one is cheapest on that day. Both sites let you find the right memory by computer model, so it is guaranteed to be the same specs as the memory Apple puts in the machine.

Any DDR2-677 SO-DIMM's modules are going to be the same specs as what runs in the MBP. Usually compatibility issues are not a concern if you pick the right speed and from a popular brand like Crucial, OCZ, G. Skill, Corsair, ect. Newegg or Frys are both usually cheaper than direct from Crucial or OWC. You can buy the same Crucial RAM from Newegg and Frys.

I just ordered this 4GB set of GSkill RAM for my 2.4Ghz Penryn MBP from NEWEGG....

any thoughts or opinions on these? they were a really good price at $69.99 - $5 online coupon and free shipping. $65 shipped seemed like a great deal for 4GB Ram.

Why didnt you get this ? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231154

I just ordered these yesterday and they should be here tomorrow. Although you wont see a major difference, the one that I picked up had Latency 4 instead of the ones you ordered which is Latency 5.

Hmm I saw that...but I didnt find a definitive answer on if the Latency 4 was worth $20 more than Latency 5. Any ideas on the performance between 4 and 5 latencys? and is the increase worth an extra $20?

Corsair has published a "white" paper showing their new low (CAS 4) latency 4GB memory kit (2x2GB) for MacBook Pro and other Apple laptops running Photoshop 20% faster than a normal (CAS 5) latency 4GB kit.

We ran our own set of benchmarks with the Corsair memory including Photoshop, Compressor, and After Effects "stress" tests. The average advantage with the low latency memory was 1% -- or within the "margin of error" IMHO.

Does this product work in mac? Newegg says PC.

On the newegg site this product is only listed under "PC" memory and not under "mac". All the G Skill 4GB memory for mac is cs 5. Are you sure this is ok to use in a MBP?

just installed the GSkill latency 5 RAM that came from newegg. the box looked pretty smashed up, i was pretty nervous and hoped i didnt get bad sticks....but intalled it fine and worked fine. a damn good deal for 4GB Ram for $65 shipped

conclusion

So after 2 pages..
Everything works, nobody knows whats the fastest ram(except latency 4 is little faster then 5), and we've seem some different prices.

Is there anyone that can tell me if 1 brand is better/faster then others and why?

I liked the post about the benchmark ty for that.

I just read through this thread for the first time and I've gotten that the best brands are Crucial, OCZ, G. Skill, Corsair. Which makes me happy, I just got 1 2gb stick for my cousins computer and it was g.skill, I was a bit iffy about going with g.skill because I had never heard of it, but it was 10$ less.
all in all it doesn't matter, i'm sending it back tomorrow, his computer can only handle 2gb max, and he already has 1 1gb so i'd rather get him a matching pair.

which brings me to my vote, the only opinion I have is a vote against newegg, I think I'm going to end up 15$ down after returning this memory. I know it's not there fault that I have to return it, but there are plenty of companies that have much better return policies then newegg, and there customer service kind of blows, quick but rude.

thanks for all of this information though, hopefully I can find his 1gb stick and my 2x2gb sticks for my mbp at the same site, cause I want mine BADLY, and shipping's a killer.

FYI, the price of this CL4 set just dropped 10 bucks on newegg. (5 in price + shipping was changed to free)
Now that's a tough deal to beat. So I ordered a set.

Deals at Frys.com

FYI:

CRUCIAL 2GB DDR2 PC5300 CL=5 - $19.99 after rebate

OCZ 2GB DDR PC5400 CL=5 - $19.99 after rebate

4GB for $40 :)

EDIT: It appears the OCZ is SOLD OUT.

EDIT #2: I just ordered 2X the Crucial RAM. It says ont he product page that it is not available for pickup, however it allowed me to chose the PICKUP IN STORE option during checkout. I called the store to confirm that I could so this, and they said yes. Also, FYI, the in store price is $10 more than the online price...

Now the price went back up 22 dollars. What causes these wild fluctuations?
