I just got a new MacBook Pro today, and I want to transfer files from my current Mac: some plists in ~/Library/Preferences and part of my Application Support folder to the new machine, along with my music and documents. What's the best way to do this without messing up the permissions, group, and owner of the files? I don't want to set them to 777 or anything; I want them to maintain the permissions they already have, and be able to read and write to them as I do on the old machine.

Does the Migration Assistant not do this?

I suppose so, but I prefer a little more fine-grain control over the process. What worked best for me was mounting my old hard drive via the network to my new machine, and just copying them over. The key seems to be using the destination machine to do the copying.
