What's the difference between iCloud backup and wifi sync?

So you sync with iTunes at work? Can't you download podcasts before work?

No I sync with iTunes over night at home. Theoretically I could but I don't.

Here's my understanding.

iCloud backups backup your app data, pics, settings, and documents. It does NOT backup purchases such as music, TV episodes, movies, or video in PhotoStream.

Wifi syncs function the same way as USB syncs on your computer. It will sync music, TV, movies and video on your camera roll.

One question, I have use an ewallet. does iCloud also sync the data in my wallet? On another post here a guy restored from iCloud and his DataVault data did not come back but that app has a 'restore' function which restored his data. I don't know where it restored from.

I'm tempted to go through the entire exercise this weekend just to check it out for sure. I'll just backup via UBS first so I can restore if i need to.

If I were you I would download the podcasts before going to work from home. Either night before or morning of. And directly from the iPhone. Having to use your computer is an unnecessary move IMO.

That's what I'm afraid of and that is a real problem. My ewallet is my most important app. I use eWallet and it has a backup function. I performed that, emailed myself the file and then put the file up on Dropbox so I think I can recover if I'm out of town. But I think too many people are assuming that everything they have will be backed up and I don't think it is. Not really a true backup if that's the case.

If I'm right, I foresee a lot of folks being very unhappy the first time they have to restore and do not have a full backup to use. I think too many people are diving right in without full knowledge of exactly what does and does not happen. Some of us who have raised these questions have been pooh-bahed for asking but I think the questions must be asked and answered. Too many people have their lives on their phones/iPads and I see some rude awakenings due to incomplete knowledge and bad assumptions.

If the app itself provides a backup to its own server then you are safe. I just notices my pw keeper has its own backup now which I just signed up for. Lost a bunch of passwords though but I can figure them out with "forgot my password" on various websites.

Besides that, everything was recovered from iCloud backup and I was very impressed. All notes, contacts, calendars etc

eWallet doesn't do this as far as I can see and I'm ok with that because I sync with my laptop and keep a backup file on an external hard drive. But if I'm away from home it's an issue. However, since I know it's an issue I think I have addressed it via Dropbox and my backup file. I just needed to know it would be an issue. Plus, my ewallet has a lot more in it than just passwords. I keep software serial numbers, passport info, credit card info, brokerage account info - a lot of stuff other than just passwords.

Hopefully I'm pretty much up to speed now. Don't get me wrong, I love iCloud. I just need to know the little ins-and-outs before I can fully trust my setup.

One question since you have done this, can you see your bookmarks when you go to iCloud.com? I can't so I'm not sure they are really there. Nor can I see my Notes. Should I be able to?

No I cant see bookmarks. In regards to your backup, I'm not so sure it would restore ewallet with all your data inside. My restore I did with the cloud was no different than if I did it with my MacBook. I just pulled it from the cloud instead of iTunes. I am fairly certain it would have been the same had I used my MacBook.

Really? I have done one complete restore from backup from my pc and it brought my data with it. I wonder what's different from your setup? Anyway, I think I'm covered because the backup file is on Dropbox.

And thanks for the clarification on bookmarks. I will just assume for now. But I think I'll do a wipe and restore from the cloud this weekend, just to see. I have a full backup on an external hard drive. I'm taking a long vacation soon and knowing what would happen will be good. Guess I'm just a bit OCD.
