As far as I know, Nvidia does not offer workstation GPU with 8GB in that performance class. Performance wise the Pro 5500M is between the consumer 1650/1660 as mentioned by previous poster. The direct competitor would therefore be the Nvidia Quadro T2000 to which the Radeon Pro is strictly superior as it uses GDDR6.

Probably a Nvidia 1650/1660

Confirmed, but that's on Windows. macOS drivers are usually slower. Metal doesn't compare well against DX 12 and Vulkan.

Ahem...don't know how anyone can miss this for the last year....

With 16GB Quadro 5000.

With 8GB RTX 2080

It's amazing how cool they run. I tested both and was just facepalming how Razer and Nvidia achieved this incredible engineering.

Great prices in the same range as the MBP. Much better screens with up to 4K OLED 120Hz 1ms response time. They are soon introducing optical switch keyboards and the 8 core CPU models.

Apple can't put the RTX 2080 or Quadro 5000 in a MBP unless they bring back Magsafe. The Thunderbolt 3 connection is only 100w Max. Razer offers up to 240w power adapter.

But Apple priority is battery life and not having a real desktop replacement mode. So you get moderate GPU and not such a good screen.

damn this makes me feel bad for investing over 3800$ into my macbook

It's been like this for 20 years. GPU drivers are much better on Windows, they are updated twice a month, they aren't controlled by your computer maker.
Yeah I know. I purchased a mbp for a change since I have a gaming desktop. I wanted to get into coding, web dev and design. So I got this! I barely game anymore tbh.

As long as your MBP isn't faulty with popping sound and crashes you should be happy with it as a laptop for coding and design. I'm waiting for 2020 models. I think Micro LED and optical keyboard switches will be used by many companies.

what are optical keyboard switches?

what are optical keyboard switches?

They use lasers to register your keyboard presses. Much faster than physical switches and less moving parts. Razer already has them on their external keyboards and one of their Razer Blade models.

That’s awesome. Knowing apple however, I doubt they will use those switches anytime soon.

They always let other companies introduce things first, then they come and say 'Look we did it better', which normally just means smaller but weaker.

Mainly because Windows drivers include game-specific optimizations. MacOS performance will always lag behind because of this alone.

That is not the same performance class. You are taking about GPUs with 2x or higher TDP.

That's why I've switched up my purchasing.

My daily driver is a home tethered 2012 15" cMBP with 16Gig RAM and 1 TB SSD. I don't travel for work anymore, so when it came time to use some company tech $$$, I opted for a windows laptop with a GTX 1650. For less than $850, I got a 4.1lb, 15" IPS, 16Gigs of RAM with 1.5 TB SSD(.5TB NVMe, 1TB SATA). If I had waited for Black Friday/end of year sales, I could have gotten this setup for less than $750.

My nature will not allow me to spend 3+ times what a functional equivalent costs, given I still have a capable Mac.

When my current MBP gives up the ghost, I'll likely opt for the best quad core Mac laptop, within reason. Hopefully Apple leaves the dual core comedy behind, with the Macbook Air, by that point. But given Apple's penchant to gimp products to force upsales, I highly doubt it.

There aren't any dual core options from Intel for 10th gen and beyond. Unless they use a dual core ARM CPU, it's basically impossible for them to continue with it moving forward. And I'm sure they would have loved to have quad core in current MBAs if Intel had delivered.

Apple don't have agreement with NVIDIA so you woudn't see any products from them on Apple devices
it's MAX-Q version of RTX 2080 so the performance is about RTX 2070 (laptop)

I wish the display were a bit better for the price, but it's adequate for coding and web development. You don't need a powerful GPU for that either. On the software side, MacOS is better than Windows as a development OS so IMHO you made the right choice.

Anyone who is serious about gaming should build a Windows desktop. You're going to get better performance for less money than you would with any laptop. This is why I'm not a fan of gaming laptops. Apple is smart to strictly market the MacBook Pro as a mobile workstation for tasks like the aforementioned coding and web development.

The MBP should do fine if you are just getting into coding and web dev. Have fun and enjoy the system.

I’m really pissed off at this “feud” between Apple and nvidia. Instead of both of them trying to come together to some deal so their consumers benefit I now have a $3.5k laptop with, for the first time in a Mac, a decent GPU and I can’t even use it for my applications.

I do a lot of image processing and for that I use matlab which has some deal or some **** with nvidia to only support nvidia GPUs for computing.

now were switching to pytorch/tensorflow because of its ubiquity and python support and I STILL can’t use the GPU because there’s no cuda support. I can’t even buy an eGPU and use it. ****ing dumb multi billion/trillion dollar corporations fighting which directly negatively affects my lifestyle

Sadly with Nvidia and Apple you probably have the two most arrogant/proud companies in the consumer tech space.

Both are probably posturing with "I dont need you so you're the one who needs to compromise" approaches so nothing is and probably will change. Especially now that Apple is actively competing with Nvidia on the software front with Metal.

Can you work in the cloud? Plenty of cloud environments that provide access to GPUs.

And since you are switching to TensorFlow and PyTorch, you can run both of those for free in Google's Colaboratory (http://colab.research.google.com) and get GPU and TPU access.

Yeah we have plenty of servers and access to nvidias DGX systems but it’s just frustrating I always have to VNC instead of firing up some quick tests on my local computer. The 9980HK is plenty fast so it’s worth it in that regard but still.

Good riddance. There’s no reason for dual core to be in any Macs anymore.

Could you do it with Nvidia eGPU in bootcamp?
