the memories this thread brings up. if we're talking about songs we hear on the radio, the first song i can remember liking is michael jackson's "billie jean." i must have been four or five when i first heard it, and i loved it instantly.

though if it's any song, it'd have to be one of those nursery melodies. i was really fond of frere jacques.

I think my musical taste is stuck firmly in the mid-80's. My dad had a nice collection of LPs and as a kid I spent a lot of time listening to songs from Air Supply, Abba, Bee Gees, Beatles, Michael Jackson, UB40, etc. There were even some soundtracks, like Flashdance.

The 80s definitely influenced me, as I mentioned earlier (Human League, Howard Jones, Depeche Mode et al.). As a teen, I really got into synthpop and alternative dance, e.g. New Order, Information Society, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, the occasional Stock Aitken Waterman production; I have a basement corner full of 12" singles and cassette maxi-singles to prove it. I've since obtained CD or downloaded versions of almost all of these, but I've kept the originals anyway. These artists have heavily influenced my music composition, too (I play and program synths and sequencers as a hobby).

Ever since, my main tastes in music tend to be rather melodic and quite electronic. I added Eurodance and trance in the '90s and Modern Synthpop, Futurepop and Industrial in the new century.

Strangely enough, I'm digging some of the newer electro-based pop and club styles, such as LMFAO and the occasional Lady Gaga/Dev/Ke$ha track, as the simplified synth-driven sounds have obvious '80s influences. I'm so glad the Backstreet Boys/'NSync pop style is over.

Another album I remember always pinching from my uncle as a kid was Gun N Roses Appetite for Destruction.

I loved that album when it came out, got the piss taken out of me by my mates (who all later went on to be gig GnR fans), but I really can't stand it now.

Axl's just a whiny little bitch who needs to grow up.

Loved "Hög Standard" by Peps Blodsband when it came out back in 1975, and use to sing it, loud and proud, anywhere at any time.

The song might not be the most apropriate for the average 5 year old, but my parents didn't seem to mind... :D

Playing the song regularly till this day, 35 years later, and it's still one of my all time favourite songs...

At that age I was starting to gravitate towards the skaters and surfers in my school and didn't catch any crap for my newfound GnR love. I still like the album but I really can't stand Axl Rose.

I've Lost My Mummy — (The utter legend) Rolf Harris

I think I was five or so... You had to be there.

The odd thing was my mates were metal/rock fans everthing from Led Zep & Black Sabbath through to Bolt Thrower & Napalm Death. Some of them even liked Bon Jovi and Poison!

It's his whiny, nasally voice that puts me off these days...

Bon Jovi and Poison, LMAO! They had some cheek ribbing you for GnR. :D

"Cross Over the Bridge" Patti Page, 1954. I have no idea why I liked it so much, it's a pretty moody number.

Here's an odd one...

The first song I remember liking is:

Zwei Herzen im Dreivierteltakt by Will Glahe.
One of my father's favorite records, it's entirely in German. I don't understand the song well to this day but still like the way they sang it.
(The title translates to: "Two Hearts in 3/4 time")

Even more oddly, this obscure artist is on iTunes!

They didn't get me and my sister children's music until a little later, like maybe when I was 4.
Then we got into Do-Re-Mi, How Much is That Doggie in the Window?, Downtown (Dora Hall) and many others.

I still have some of those old records and remember most of the names and even the color of the labels of the ones I haven't seen since long ago.

Have Fun,
Keri

I've been told I loved the 1812 Overture... and I think it has stuck with me.

Michael Jackson Thriller as a two year old I was breaking it down, making the old ladies faint...unfortunately I can't dance anymore haha

Buck Owens "Excuse me I think I have a heartache"......I liked the drums in it. I remember my mom and dad dancing around the living room whenever Buck was on the radio.

Too hard for me to pinpoint but my first purchased must have was Blondie's Heart of Glass 45 record, the same trip or soon after I think I bought the double album of Grease. Followed by Gene Simmons solo record and the Scorpions Blackout album.
