Compression artifacts (blocking etc.) are well visible in framegrabs too.

In this 2048 60Mbit/s MP4 you can see blocking in the fine shadow gradients on the wind turbine head at the end. www.camerarentalz.com/video/retina-16×11.5.mov This would probably look a lot better with H.264.

MPEG-4 (ASP) will always suck compared to AVC. This is why I don't recommend it at all. The horizontal (but not vertical when done in the way I've explained) resolution tradeoff of anamorphic AVC at Full HD resolution introduces far less a quality degradation as transcoding to ASP.
