You must be kidding, aren't you ? 3.500 is more than enough ...

6000 is what I've saved up for the iMac so far. It includes buying a thunderbolt hdd though. Though in Norway you get a lot less fr the dollar than in the US, a lot!
But I'm not gonna pay this only to get retina. I just checked my friends new retina laptop. Retina is nice but its not a killer feature at all. It sharp, but problem is that pixels of everything else non-retina comes out much more pixelated. I prefer the regular screen currently to be honest until all softwares are retina. The contrast and color level and glare on the other hand is awesome on the rMBP.
Anyway, I'm going to max out every possible feature in my next iMac no matter what that costs.:D

That's incredible ... it's exactly what I saved too, but I have NO INTENTION of paying more than 15-20% the price of a maxed out 2011 iMac (and definitely ONLY if there'll be a minimal redesign) ... I really don't get how you could spend 6.000 while the high specs 2011 iMac costs much less ! It's probably me, though ...

If I take today's maxed out iMac in norwegian prices and convert it to dollars the iMac costs $5.200, which leaves $800 for a thunderbolt hdd. But I suspect it will be more expensive than this to max it out. The current iMac has reduced ram prices now. So with new and more ram I suspect it will be like the old prices and that ends up around $6000 usd I'm afraid. But I'll still max it out. By the time it finally arrives I probably have a gazillion dollars to spend :D

You do have euros in Norway too ? I just filled a fake order with all the specs maxed out (i7 3.4 Ghz, 16 Gb RAM, 2 TB HD + 256 Gb SSD, AMD Radeon 2 Gb, Magic Mouse+Magic Trackpad and even Applecare) : total EUR. 3.522,98 VAT included ... maybe I'm out of my mind, but I can't believe that EUR. 3.500 = USD 5.200 ! What am I doing wrong ?

EDIT : got it ... you don't have euros ! Geez, you really pay it a lot, pal !

Yes norway is an expensive country :(

why on earth are you willing to pay apple for the ram upgrade to 16gb...?? you should never buy apple ram.

Agreed ... but still, on a new iMac, I think I'd want the machine to be factory maxed out just because I'm lazy and don't want to open it to add more RAM ... I usually upgrade my pcs myself, but being it my first Apple computer (if it ever comes out !) ...

I'm sure you must have looked into this, but in case you haven't, RAM upgrade is the one thing that's MUCH EASIER on iMac than PC. Bottom of chin. One screw. In & out.

Yeps I know ... simply for once in my life just wanna open it and run it maxed out immediately : I know it's totally stupid, but sometimes humans are irrational ...

Well, if a few minutes of convenience is worth your Euro equivalent of $300, that's on you.. all I can say is that $300 is approximately how much you'd lose by buying a 2011 model and reselling it when the 2012's come out, and that would buy you weeks of convenience (getting set up in OS X) rather than minutes.

€0 — in the sense that I wouldn't get it unless it came for free. I don't think I'd have much use for retina on a computer, I tried a rMBP in a shop and it didn't strike me as mcuh different as the normal MBP. A little crispier, yes, but nothing that dramatic. Considering that an iMac is kept even farther away, I doubt it would be that important.

Me, too. I played with the rMBP and did not see a big difference. I don't think it's worth the extra money.

Damn you 42j ! Ok ... I'll get the minimum of RAM possible and I'll upgrade myself ! Now if only we had them ...

Exactly, get your ram from amazon the same day you order the iMac and mount it before turning it on the first time, so you don't have to move the computer later to do it. Extra time necessary: 3 minutes (2 of which spent to find where you the #0 screwdriver :p).

Is the RAM available on Amazon the same one that'll get with the next iMac ?

(Oh geez ! There's not even a new iMac yet ...)

Plus ... will Apple Care work if I add RAM myself without causing problems ?

AppleCare isn't affected by self-installed RAM. The only caution is that you should have the original RAM handy and install it before you take it in for repair so that you don't lose time with Apple eliminating the RAM as a possibility.

It will take Standard RAM. Probably 1600 MHz DDR3 204-pin. I get mine from Crucial, others from OWC, and others from Amazon, and others from NewEgg. It doesn't need to be the same brand Apple used.

That's been a great advice ... thank you very much indeed ! Is there a RAM brand which is more trustworthy or shall I go for a price, period ?

I'm partial to Crucial, because their system scanner is idiot-proof (if you wait to buy the RAM until you have the iMac powered up) and they've been extremely reliable. Others have their own favorite brands. This is standard PC laptop RAM, so everything you know about PC RAM reputation applies.

Idiot-proof ??? That's my RAM !
