Serious question...whats the point if adding MagSafe? Its not like it can go on the MBP or the iPad in this new form. Does this MagSafe charge faster and more safely than being plugged in?

I honestly dont see the benefit of MagSage and if there is one can someone please tell me what it is.

They failed to deliver on Airpower, so I see it as Apple falling for the sunken cost fallacy and having to release something eventually

More reliable wireless charging (apparently a lot of people find getting their phones positioned on the wireless charging pads accurately tricky) and likely a phasing out of the physical connector in a generation or two (with everything moving to wireless using AirPlay, wireless syncing, wireless CarPlay etc). It also permits 15W charging compared to a maximum of 7.5W otherwise.

Why is that a benefit to the user?

I'd love to know the answer to this as well because I'm not looking forward to syncing contents on my Mac to my iPhone over wifi. I feel like it would take much longer than it already does with a Lightning cable.

It would also eliminate the ability to access external drives or SD cards through the Lighting port. Hopefully a smart connector of some kind will still allow for these capabilities when they do away with the port.

Seems like Apple is trying to combine the benefits of wired charging and "wireless" charging.

IF you like wireless charging, then it is good. Because it will always be in the perfect spot, which is needed to charge at full speed and to not loose up to ~ 80% energy because of misalignment. (also causing more heat in the process)

The benefit is mostly to Apple, MagSafe opens up massive potential revenue gains with accessories.

Very true. If the rumours are true and Apple goes portless, it’ll increase the sale of their wireless charger (I highly doubt they’ll include the charging pad as part of the phone; it’ll be a optional purchase), and force a change with how a user uses their phone. Your standard tasks like taking calls, replying to messages/emails, taking photos are made unnecessarily more difficult when the phone is placed on the charging pad!

Yes which can happen a lot when one checks their phone in the night or when they put it down in the charger when going to bed and not checking its aligned Properly

i Prefer to sleep and my phone is in my office on charger 20m away

I think MagSafe is there to kickstart a new ecosystem of accessories for the iphone. Chargers and wallets are just two of the myriad of possibilities. I wonder what other stuff can be attached to the back of a phone?

so they wont make an usb-c port - they will go with magsafe.

Yes but they do it for money.
Each third party manufacturer has to pay Apple a fee for every single Lighting connector to be certified which is huge profit for Apple. MagSafe allows them to go Wireless while keeping this very lucrative B2B fees with third party manufacturer to be certified MagSafe and allow 15W charging speed. It's one of the key reason Apple don't care about USB-C, no fee here while not beeing "brand new" from a marketing / average Joe perspective + MagSafe allow to increase price and margin per accessory.

also with the new wallet and cases they will make good money

If MagSafe came out with the debut of the original iPhone I feel like the lightning connection would seem like the upgrade at least for me. You don’t need a fragile glass back on your iPhone. Lightning uses less electricity. Lightning doesn’t require the puck. It’s just a tiny plug. I realize many like not having to plug it in. it just seems like a lot of fuss for little to no real benefit.

I agree it's just to add an extra new feature while making money and convince more people to buy the new phones.
A good wired USB-C fast charge is really all I want.

I usually try to use my devices for as long as possible, so don't upgrade to the latest iPhone each year. This year I will. While it's not because of MagSafe, MagSafe is still the feature I am most excited about besides improved cameras.

It just feels like the best mix of wired & wireless charging. You get much higher watt and therefore it's faster, you can still pickup the phone and use it quickly without interrupting charging. And you also can just pop it onto the charger or a charging dock without fiddling around with fitting a tiny connector into that lighting port.
To me it just seems like a super slick experience as it's always been with the Apple Watch. I am honestly wondering why it took them so long to bring this over from their own Watch.

All good points. I think for anyone wanting wireless charging this is a big improvement

Honestly, it's a fun little gimmick to get more people to use wireless charging. It's not really something you need and certainly isn't a reason to upgrade.
