The iPad is my go-to device for learning: ebooks, Udemy, etc.

I appreciate an Apple device that doesn't burn my lap like the MacBook Pro does. It's also nice to have a portable second monitor for the Mac through Sidecar.

iPads and Macs complement each other very well. I can't imagine dropping one in favour of the other.

What's the point of owning an ipad if you're not an artist/teacher? - an apple silicon macbook can run all ios apps and do way more like ftp/coding..!

1. Developers have to opt their iOS/iPadOS into the Mac App Store for it to be available to install on an Apple Silicon Mac.

2. Unless a developer makes their such that using a mouse and keyboard isn't a horrible experience, developers will still want to make a Catalyst app (making it no different than porting their app to Intel Macs).

3. Given the above two points, some iOS/iPadOS apps won't translate super well to the Mac without going all the way and making a Catalyst app.

4. Given the above three points, sometimes (most times, I'd imagine) an iPad is still preferable for running an iPadOS app to an Apple Silicon Mac, just as an iPhone is sometimes (most times, I'd argue) more preferable for running a non-universal iOS app designed for iPhone and iPod touch than an iPad is.

5. Even the 12.9" iPad Pro is way more portable than Apple's most portable Macs.

I think its all been covered, but I like the modularity of the iPad Pro - since native cursor support arrived & the Magic keyboard, I can use it like a laptop, but remove the iPad in seconds and use it like a tablet, take notes etc.

And it does FTP, I do that all the time.

I think the biggest thing that's changed in iPads over the last few years is that you can now do so many things you'd traditionally use a laptop for, without having to jump through hoops and setup convoluted workflows to compensate for the limitations.

M1 can do more but for a purpose of consumption iPad is still king. You can take it anywhere (bedroom, restroom etc.) and the iOS is underrated. I can’t think of the last time the app crashed or hanged on my iPad. I got a few just for 2 days of use of my new MBA (looking at you TV app)
..and the smoothness of iPad.. M1 is no slouch but iPad still beat it. And I only have Air 3, not any Pro. I guess the advantage of everything is locked down and not much multitasking going on making an iPad a great workhorse for consumption.
I can’t live without an iPad. If there’s only 12” OLED version 😋

Laptops are still laptops and tablets are still tablets. M1 hasn’t changed anything in this regard. Same entry level Macs with better performance and thermals. Bring out a hybrid touch screen MacBook with a foldaway keyboard and pencil support, then we’ll talk. Until then, iPads remain absolutely useful and relevant. Plus, they can also be used in portrait orientation which is useful for certain content.
