I'm probably going to take advantage of the $225 Apple wants to give me for my Series 3, and I've never traded in a watch before. Is this how it works?

1) Unpair S3 with phone
2) Factory reset watch
3) Pair new S4
4) Call Verizon to have service transferred to new S4

Thanks!

You got it. And if I’m not mistaken, the watch factory resets automatically once you unpair it so it’s really just one step.

If I recall correctly, I believe Apples Trade in is through a third-party company they use called ‘Brightstar’, which some have reported some negativity with them, I would make sure you test your Watch fully functional before you send it in, because sometimes they have had these bogus complaint of others claiming that the Watch was not working properly or had issues upon receival.

Has anyone else had experience with Apple’s trade-in service? I, too, was not planning to upgrade to the S4, but if Apple will give me $225 for my S3, I’m in. Just a little wary of the trade-in service. Sounds like once you send it in, if they disagree with the condition of your item, you’re stuck with whatever they end up offering you. Sounds like if you do it in-store, you get instant credit so maybe that’s the better route.

Not for nothing, I opted to see how much I could get for my S0, and they only offered 25 dollars. I'm so not doing that. Yeah, I know its the original model, but it seems so low.

Thanks for the warning. When I initiated the trade-in as a test, it asks if the watch powers on or not, then the condition. If you drill down on what that means it says, "Is the screen free of cracks, chips, and major scratches? Is the enclosure free of major dents? And are the Digital Crown, side button, and band release buttons intact and functioning normally?"

I think I will be ok, but will take pics of my S3 before sending it off.

You'll definitely get more from selling it, but that does take more effort, and it can be a pain, if you have a high maintenance buyer.

Can you do it in an Apple Store as an option??? I haven't seen that choice offered anywhere.

Yep, not trading my S0 in for $25. Ever since I got an S3, my S0 became my dedicated fitness watch with a sports band, so I'd rather keep it for that purpose than trading it in for $25.

Just mail it out, or bring it in.
Trading in your device is as easy as buying a new one. We’ll give you a prepaid trade-in kit or shipping label to send it off. Or you can bring it to an Apple Store. We’ll either give you instant credit toward the purchase of a new product or send your device on to our recyclers.

I plan on doing this with my Series 3. That new watch is sleek.

Has anybody seen when it will be available? I see on apple.com that we can order starting tomorrow but I'm interested in the store pickup/trade in option.

Interesting.

Does your fitness and movement data from both your S0 and S3 merge together for 1 view somehow in Healthkit?

Yes, data from both watches appear in Activity. There is an Auto Switch setting in the Watch app....whatever watch you put on becomes the active watch.

I think it was 9/21.

Can you preorder on apple.com and then bring the old watch into a store for credit after the series 4 arrives instead of using a return shipping kit?

Nop. Once you pre-order it's too late to have the credit applied towards the new watch. All you'll get is a gift card. Or at least that's what an Apple customer representative told me when I asked the same question.

I've sent Apple a message asking this so we'll see how they respond. If you order in the Apple store app and indicate that you have a trade in, they send the shipping kit and once they inspect the device, they refund the trade in value your payment method used to purchase the Series 4. It seems that they should be able to do the same if I just take it into the store but who knows.

This isn’t entirely true.

When you preorder, there is an option to trade in and receive a refund on your purchase rather than a gift card.

It is the option in the checkout after the option to select AppleCare +.

If you don’t select the trade in at checkout, then it’s too late to receive the credit, which is what happened to you it seems.

I’m curious about this as well. I selected the refund option for my trade in at checkout, and I’d rather take it to the store than deal with mailing it in and hoping everything goes smoothly.

I'll post the response here when I hear back from Apple.

I haven't preordered yet, just weighing my options. Maybe I'll just show up early for my 9 am XS plus(XXX edit) Max pickup on Friday and the store will have the SBSS S4 available for purchase.

I tried the trade in page and its only $65 for a series 1 aluminum in good condition. While you may not have to give in the band, if I sell it with the band I can probably get close to double that price. I have the original box and everything also.

Exactly. When I did the preorder at 3:00 AM I wasn't sure how the trade-in would work and decided to not waste time and leave it for later...

Apple phone support told me to order the new watch and then after receipt go to the Apple Store within 14 days to trade in your old watch to receive a refund to your original payment method in the amount of the trade in value.

This is also the method I am hoping for if anyone else is able to confirm.

Mine is GPS 38mm which is $279 brand new now at Apple.
Trade in offer is $175.
If I sell it for $200 on ebay, the fee is $20, shipping is $8 and I am left with $172.
I doubt I will get more than $210 at most on ebay.
