Noobish question....... There must be a way to use shortcut for typing # instead of edit -> special characters.
Enlighten me please.

Here's a real helpful tip for finding keyboard shortcuts to type any character you want:

Go into System Preferences, then International. Enable the Input Menu, and also check the box for the virtual keyboard tool (I forget what it's called). Once this is turned on, activate it from the Input Menu (it's the one with the flag). When you press modifier keys (Shift, Option, and both Option and Shift) the character that will appear will be displayed in the virtual keyboard.
