If you would be upgrading to something with pretty much the same spec and screensize then you might as well wait until your old one breaks. However if it were me, I would upgrade to the i7 just because of the sheer difference. Might not be absolutely nessasary but it's still amazing over anything else i've used.

Depends if you have the cash to splash I suppose. (I don't, still ordered the i7 though ha)

There is no set time. Basically when you have the money and want the best / biggest currently available, that is the time to upgrade.

I just upgraded from a 17"/1.8GHz PPC iMac to a 21.5"/Intel Core 2 Duo 3.33GHz iMac, and am very happy with it. There was nothing wrong with the older iMac, running under OS 10.5. My wife inherited my older iMac, and is very happy with it, too.

The PPC iMac original hard drive was small at 80GB or so, but I replaced it with a 250GB Hitachi drive. The new iMac has a 1TB hard drive inside and enough slots for 16GB of RAM, versus 2GB (maybe 4GB?) of RAM for the old one.

What you may want to do is to see if Apple will have some sales coming up, or maybe after Christmas. These discounts are around $100.00, similar to educational discounts.
