Anything worth tracking would be cheaper to add to my insurance. As for my car, I also have insurance and I'm not looking to break up any crime rings, I'll let insurance deal with that. I doubt the police would track your car using apple tags. Perhaps my dog but I think most people would just remove the tag and keep him;)

I’ve read the thread. One thing that I have not seen mentioned is storage/organization. Can I use Airtags to locate a specific container, box, etc within a storage container/room/etc? Yes I know I could label the containers and it would be cheaper and faster but where’s the fun in that?

If my car is stolen, I don’t want it back!

I sometimes visit places with my bike where loads of bikes are parked. Very easy to find my bike now or remember were I parked it.

Car key fobs have gotten ridiculously expensive!!! (now $700 to replace?!) - so I'll be using a couple for that, even though I'm not prone to losing them.

I really wish car companies would get their head out of their a**es and just give us apps that use the bluetooth on our phones and watches along with a secure encryption key to unlock our vehicles. We don't need to carry these things around!?

Oh - and they need to make the app free - none of this BS subscription s**t.

Cough.. Tesla.. cough

Seriously, it's been game changing. Not only do I not need a key to drive my car, I don't even need my phone! There are Apple Watch apps to start/drive your Tesla (assuming you get LTE coverage).

Sure, there's a little risk in going "watch only" if you don't always have good cell coverage, but I think of it as more of a back up if you forget your phone, you drop/break it in the parking lot, or it gets stolen while you're out and about.

Car keys? Pffft.. never going back.

Thinking about attaching to dog’s collars. Attaching to things that others might lose like checked baggage. Stash one in a laptop bag in case it gets stolen. Hide one on a bicycle for same reason.

How will AirTags be useful for luggage? If the airport loses your checked baggage they won't care about your AirTag information, and you'll never be close enough to detect it.

Yep - I know Tesla does - the rest of them need to get to this. And STOP the practice of trying to charge subscriptions for things that make no sense (look at BMW and Mercedes trying to charge monthly subscriptions so their customers can have CarPlay?! - just criminal!) Charging a monthly fee for doing nothing.
Toyota also has an app and "Remote connection" option you can add to your vehicle - where you would have to pay a monthly fee to be able to unlock / remote start your vehicle from your phone / watch - again, just offensive to be charging for this.

Yeah, I previously drove a BMW (now driven by my wife) and had the last year before they went off trying to charge monthly for CarPlay. They reversed that position, thankfully.

Tesla actually does have a $10 month subscription service, and I don't mind paying it. It includes ad-free internet radio, satellite map view, live-traffic navigation, as well as internet for watching Netflix, etc. Those things do cost money to Tesla (unlike BMW with CarPlay), so it doesn't feel shady that they ask me to pay to use those specific services.

Baggage handler with phone walks by Airtag and it reports its location so you know where it is. If it’s in another city you at least can tell the airline where to look for it.

In my opinion they wouldn't care what you tell them. They already have procedures to deal with lost luggage and they will simply follow them. They're not going to take your word about an AirTag pinging in another city and say "oh right, we'll phone up that city and get an employee to wander around the GPS coordinates you gave us". If their standard procedures don't find the bag anyway they'll just put in an insurance claim not start following up AirTag clues.

That does actually bring up an interesting use case though. What if you could "toss" Air Tag ownership to someone else in iMessage? Thereby, they could take over tracking of the device. If these become popular enough, companies could use a feature like that for asset recovery.
