I unplugged this from the motherboard during dissembly of a PowerBook G4 1.0 12" (A1010 - EMC 1986) and I'm wondering what it is..

Ah that's cute. I doubt I should put this back in..

I’ve had the same thought about the internal modems - do I need this excess hardware that will never be used again? I could possibly save power and reduce weight by 50g or so, but ultimately I have reinstalled just to keep it “complete”.

I can’t remember exactly how, but the modem was able to send and receive faxes. This might save you a few dollars the next time someone needs you to fax them a signed document.

However, here in Australia, analog lines are being phased out and I don’t think the telephone jack on my wall would support a fax call...

I remember fax spam. Coming to work on Monday and seeing rolls of pricey fax paper wasted with unsolicited mail.

Sending fax-messages is the mission-critical task for my PPC's /w modem.
After switching from Analog/ISDN to an IP-based connection the analog fax still works fine with a combined Router-box with analog plugs.

Go use it :D
Plug your old Sega Dreamcast to that Modem and connect it to the Internet in 2018! Enjoy online multiplayer games like Worms World Party, Phantasy Star Online, StarLancer or 4x4 Evolution (Still some more)
