last minute issues with the optical drive or the new manufacturing process? A desire to keep focus on the 15" and new MB models? A desire to avoid shipping and stock delays by allowing Apples manufacturing and production infrastucture to focus on a few models at a time?

    Who knows.

the MBP17 simply don't move of the shelves as fast, they're heavy and somewhat cumbersome when compared to it's smaller nimble brother.. hence Apple's slowness to adopt.... it'll come!!

My guess is that they will remain in stock because of the flawed nVidia graphics chip they use.

Indeed, because 15" models came with the same trouble.
