I've been buying refurb mac for decades. Now that telephones cost as much as a computer, and since subsidized plans are no more, figured I should check out the Apple Refurb store and see if I could get a deal.

But as you can see, Apple's refurb store has NO phones they current sell new on it. iPhone 8's, X, XS, XR. No SE, no 12, no 11. Ok I guess I am wrong, the XR is still sold new, and it's in the refurb store, but with none in stock. The phones they do have available are old and are not good deals at all compared to what they're selling new.

Did someone forget to update the iPhone refurb store for the past 2 years or something?
I'm hoping I can get an SE or 11 for a deal, but I really don't want to buy a used phone. But Apple Refurb is really good as new.

iPhones are selling more in volume than any other Apple products, so I'm sure Apple prioritizes refurbished units for replacements instead of reselling them on the refurbished store. Thus we only see mostly discontinued models in it.

Whether they're good value or not is up to you. Unlike Macs where Apple almost always discontinue the whole lineup whenever they refresh the lineup, Apple keeps selling select older models. This makes the refurbished iPhone pricing awkward, like you noted.

I'd love to tell you, but unfortunately apple doesn't sell refurbished iPhones in Australia. 🤦‍♂️😳😂

The official apple iPhone refurb store has never been the best place to find deals on iPhones. Even when the newer models are in stock, carrier incentives on even new phones usually outpace apple's secondhand price.

I'm with you, I buy all my macs from the refurb store to save that few hundred bucks or spec-up my config higher than I otherwise would have... but iPhones? I usually wait around for a good trade-in deal from T-Mobile. They were running "free" 12 mini just a while back if had you traded in any phone newer than the 7. Not even add-a-line. What phone do you have now, on what carrier?

I imagine Apple has put most of their resources into making new iPhones and refurbishing those that are needed for warranty replacements. Why not buy a used iPhone? I just bought a mint condition 11 for $490 with 100% battery health and would recommend buying from a reputable seller. Apple sells the refurbished iPhone X for $550 but it does come with a warranty.
