Picked up my new iPad Air a few hours ago and while I LOVE the size/weight, did something change with the screen materials? Maybe I didn't get the memo...

I've had every regular size iPad since launch and this feels completely different. Is the screen no longer glass? Feels like that Gorilla Glass stuff that flexes like plastic.

I'm not saying it's necessarily bad, but it does feel kind of cheap and it was just the very first thing I noticed when setting it up.

    Anyone else? Your thoughts?

They're probably using a lighter version of the glass to reduce weight.

Makes sense. The one thing I always liked about the iPad/iPhone is it never had that flex in the screen which most of the "cheaper" devices have. Guess I'll have to get used to it.

Same thing happened with the 1st gen mini. Uses a lighter glass, which has a softer feel.

I feel a difference.. But not something I'd return it for though.

I once shattered my iPad 3 screen and it was replaced in Chinatown with a cheap plastic screen that had way more flex than the glass original screen. This kind of reminds me of that. The flex really does make it feel a bit cheaper.

Definitely does not feel as substantial as.the screen on my 3rd gen. Tapping it makes me think its plastic, but I know better. Its probably just different resonance due to being thinner.

Doesn't feel cheap at all to me. It feels kind of like my old mini's screen.

1LB trumps the supposed "cheap" screen, IMO. I noticed the difference from my 3rd gen iPad but I don't notice any flexing or anything. I'm just happy to no longer be holding a brick!

Compared to the iPad 4 the Airs screen 'sounds' very cheap.

You would think you were tapping on hollow plastic , is it?

I think the mini is the same construction that's why, the iPad 4 is in a different league. Heavier yes, but the last full size model had a much more quality sound to using the screen.

I haven't noticed this and my guess is the lighter weight makes you think it is less substantial when it is just as strong as ever.

Have we really gotten to the point where we are complaining about how a screen sounds when you tap it?? Talk about first world problems!
