The iPhone is way too bright on full 100%! I can't even have my computer display at 100% brightness. In fact, my Apple Cinema Display is on the lowest brightness setting possible and that's still too bright at night.
I keep my iPhone 3G brightness nob just below the "g" in "brightness"
I keep my original iPhone at 50% though because it seems like that display is dimmer than the 3G at night but, when light hits it, it blinds you. I think the sensor is too sensitive or something. However, on the 3G, the sensor isn't sensitive enough... I try to look at it in the sun and I can't see a thing until I lock it and unlock it again for the sensor to react.

Does having it full brightness cause you to look like your avatar?
Hehehe.

Mine's at 30 or 25, having it bright hurts my eyes.
