Then you haven't been using them long enough... :)

LOL Ironically, in 12 years I have only had one hard drive fail on me, and it was a newer SATA only about a year old. I have a bunch of hard drives that I pulled out of Win 3.11 boxes that still work.

I am still religious about backups though, not willing to chance my data on my luck with hard drives.

LOL. Only had one fail, and like already said it was a 230GB that came with a 2nd user PMG5. I was about to replace it anyway with a 1TB or 2TB.

Long enough ? Even the 35MB drive in my SE still works perfectly (OK, it's slow).
But if you get in on a bad batch, it'll happen sooner rather than later. We used to have 10 drives fail a week (from about 750) if we got a bad batch from IBM many (15) years ago, we always kept about 60 spares, but we'd have to re-order 300 9GB and 20GB drives if we suspected a bad batch, and then set to replacing them.

I am looking for a 1TB hard drive with fire wire 800 connection. I'll be using it primarily as my time machine backup but with a 1TB I may partition it as well and store some other media on there. I don't need a very small drive, it can sit on my desk, no problem!

Anyone have any experience with Lacie or can anyone recommend another manufacturer?

Thanks

I am very happy with my NewerTech miniStack (v3). It has every connector you could want (USB, FW400, FW800, eSATA) and plenty of ports to boot. I haven't had any problems with it. I've gotten it for my computer support clients as well and they seem to like it a lot, and they run a long time. If you buy from macsales.com you can select what kind of drive you want in it, or buy your own bare drive somewhere else and put it in there.

I saw an add on Amazon at buy.com for a 2tb G-force Megadisk esata for $109.00, I thought "how can I go wrong" huh! First of all they shipped me a 1tb, which I accepted?? then today I tried to set it up I connected as instructed, restarted my Macpro (10.6.5) aaagh the dreaded question mark so I force quit disconnected the ex hd and reopened my mac which opened fine.

I then connected the g-force only I couldn't see it on my screen so I checked disk utility, still can't see it I then checked my system profiler; nada, nichts rien 何 nothing except frustration.

On the bright side, my old old Lacie 80gig and my newer seagate 500gig are doing just fine, I should have stayed with brands that have been working! which leads us to todays question "when is a bargain not a bargain?

That's good to know. I have done my homework on the enclosure, but I've read alot of negative about them too...Although most of the negative was toward the miniStack 2.0. I honestly haven't found many user reviews of the 3.0 model.

External HD top choice....

All- Thanks. It seems that its a 2 horse race WD or Seagate for the most part.....

I have a couple of LaCie 'Neil Poulton' drives (1TB & 2TB). I've been using the 1TB for over 2 years now and have had zero issues with it. The new 2TB is preforming just as well.

Yay for the search function. I was looking for advice on a new 1TB external HD so this was helpful. I was looking for one that I could keep connect to my Airport Extreme most of the time but also have the option to bring it with me when I have to travel for work.

I currently have a 250GB older g-drive, very heavy & definitely not portable. I use it for backups. I also have a 320GB g-drive mini but it does not work w/ the Airport for some reason (not powerful enough?). I've had a WD in the past and it failed on me so I've been weary since. But maybe it's time to get over that?

I'm thinking the Seagate FreeAgent or the WD My Passport. Both seem portable enough but will it work w/ the Airport when connected? It'll likely need a power source when connected to the Airport but can be powered by the MBP when connected directly. Any recommendations?

Am I asking for too much out of a HD? lol.

Just an update on my previous comment. I took the plunge and ordered the miniStack v3 from OWC and so far it is great! I got the empty enclosure and put in my own 1TB drive. That was a very simple procedure, and all the different connections are great.

Currently I have the miniStack, my Mac Mini, and my Airport Extreme all stacked on top of each other and plugged into a UPS. I love this setup.

In general, I like Seagate hard drives, but the best that there are changes in time and research is always interesting.

its own building can be great, but you should make sure you buy a good speaker. Too many packages on the market have insufficient cooling, not sleeping or sleeping wrong or unreliable, and is a great way to destroy a hard drive unless you turn from time to time for the occasional backup.

greamjhonson / arenajhonson spambot ftw :D

@Dalton63841: That conveniently stacked setup looks purdy but be careful of excess heat if they're stacked directly on top of each other. Ventillation is a good thing :)

I've had issue with both WD and Seagate, but I think WD is "winning."

I need an external with an on/off switch, 1TB or larger, and FW....any recommendations?

I'm tempted to try the LaCie line

So, over the past 4 years I've had two Western Digital Mybook Hard drives. They both have died after turning 2 years old. I feel like giving another company a go even though I know lifespans aren't very long on any hard drive.

I've been looking at Lacie hard drives because they support firewire 800 but they are a tad bit more expensive. I don't mind paying the extra money if I can get more than two years out of it.

I have just had a bad experience with a LaCie Big Disk 1TB hard drive. It has corrupted twice in 2 years and my colleague who also bought at the same time same thing happened so would not recommend
