I have smart playlists set up for all of my short (3-5 minute) podcasts so I don't have to fumble around with the iPod after a podcast ends.

If I'm in the mood for music and don't know what to listen to, I listen to two individual smart playlists ("going to work" and "going home") that are compiled of unrated and unplayed songs and made to fit into about a 17 minute (the length of my commute) window. That way, over time I'll listen to songs in my library that have zero listens as a means of finding new music or trimming the fat of the music library.

MOST of the time, though, I simply listen to music or a 20 or so minute podcast during the commute or when going from place to place.

I'm afraid so :(
It's built into OS X and only works with OS X so there's no use for it in the general PC world
That's not to say that you can't write scripts in Notepad for example, you just won't be able to see if they work, or get them to actually do anything :)

Aah , thats to bad. Well, I'll drool over my iPod for now until I get a Mac ;)

I used to be a guy that just shuffled all the songs on my iPod, but recently I have gotten into rating each song and then setting up smart playlists based on Rating or Rating and Artists. I have a playlist for songs rated 4 or 5 starts, for songs rated 1 star (stuff that I need to to re-tag or delete or update album art), and for unrated songs. For my favorite artists, I have a smart playlist for all songs rated 4 or 5 stars by that artist. I also have a smart playlist for my newest music, limited to 100 songs.

On iTunes at my desktop, I'm usually in the mood for a particular artist or song, so I don't utilize playlists much while at my computer.

However, I do have two playlists built for my 4Gb iPod nano:
  • The first, nanoEssentials, contains my all-time faves and occasional new hot choonz I'm wanting to get into my regular rotation. It's about 2Gb.
  • The second, nanoRandom, is a smart playlist that assembles 1.5Gb of random tunes that do not appear in nanoEssentials. Every time I perform a "major" sync, I re-randomize this playlist so that my nano's contents don't get stale.

As for the nano itself, I use it 99% of the time on shuffle mode, so that it mixes the Essentials and Random together.

Thanks for the tip . I have started doing this ;)

Party Shuffle and Smart Playlists for me.

I go through all the music in my library and change the tags to reflect my personal organization needs. For example: I recently went through and changed the tag of any Christmas songs to: Christmas. Then I just create a smart playlist for that particular tag.

I've really enjoy the Party Shuffle mode, too.

Wow...that's me too!
